Jigging Rods With 17# load

Submited By MrBill MrBill is offline
I read where the average offshore fisherman uses 17 pounds of drag when fighting larger fish. So, I put four different jigging rods to the test by lifting 17 pounds of sash weights 3 inches off the ground. I had the camera in the same place and stood in the same place for the pictures.

The Trevela XXH was a wet noodle. The line was touching the rod between the reel and the first guide. I wouldn't put more than 10 pounds of drag if using the XXH Trevela. A great rod for the money, but if targeting fish over 25 pounds expect to have patients and spend some time on the fish.

Of the four, If I was just jigging for Amberjacks at the rigs, I would stick with the Zenaq Monster Buster. It could probably take 30 pounds of constant drag with no problems.

The Genesis Oceancraft Long Range Special is a great all around jigging rod with good lifting power.

The Tuna Max F-400XH is another fine all around jigging rod with excellent recovery and lifting power. Very well made with premium components.

You'd have to ask Randy the above questions. I'm at work as usual and sometime this weekend I plan on doing some more lift tests. Lifting weights gives me an idea of what the rod can saftely handle once on the water. One test will be the Trevela MH "F" series, and the other will be an OTI 600 gram jigging rod.

If your jigging with 400 to 500 gram jigs, you don't want a noodle stick!!!!
I would think you are targeting some nice size fish with those size jigs and an Accurate 665. What species are you pursuing?

Here is the SS spin with a 17 pound load. Also a pic with a 24 pound load. 17 pounds is nothing for that rod, no twisting what so ever with light load. I'll try it again Sunday with a 25+ pound load and see if there is any twisting.

Paul708,

Somehow I bought or traded someone for a Jigging Master 300 spin rod. I think you made it. I'll put it to the test. Do you think it can handle 12 pounds without snapping?

mr bill.. i was asking about rod(guide)twisting on the 4 conv wrapped rods you tested? i saw a pic somewhere of a rod with the last 3 or 4 guides looking like they were turned(twisted) like the rod was WAY overloaded..thanks for posting the SS pics..i just delivered one to a charter guy from jersey. who sent me a pic(of your rod) and said.."make me this". It came out Great, but i didnt get any pics .....the JM with 12#..it should work. i have a 300-350 and 400 spin on the bench, i am hoping for more than 12# ..

Hi,

MrBill I would be targeting Big dogtooth Tuna ,AJ and GT IN 150 TO 200 Depth..so 400 to 500gram rods is my preffered rig..Can you suggest a good rod for this application? Im 5.4 in height medium built ..I find some US made rods too long for me (Grip and Reel Seat from the butt )
Thank you all for your informative posts!! More luck
