I agree 100%. I talked to a builder the other day that said he wanted to just build a jigging rod for the average fishermen. I told him Shimano already does that. If you want to build custom, then learn it and understand it, before you turn the first blank.

Just to background myself - I don't have the on water experience of Kil or many others on this forum but I have been using & selling JM rods extensively and pioneered Japanese style jigging in New Zealand over 5 years ago. I claim to fully understanding the Japanese/Butterfly jigging style and have adpoted the Pony Liu style as my own. I have taught it to many NZ'rs who have taken up this contagious sport fishing and are achieving spectacular results now.

The factory JM rods are almost perfect in every way, I can't fault them. Apart from custom issues like longer grips, longer reach or different thread colours; departure from the factory design will be robbing the JM blank of its exacting design. Pony Liu is a perfectionist, he will hold back a product until he is totally satisfied with its design and performance. I don't think his rods can be better by any other and I've had the opportunity to bend most of Japan's best. The JM factory rods are high perfomance rods and both Kil and myself know that these rod are as good as it gets. By all means, gamble on a custom jigger but remember there is an off the rack solution available that cannot be bettered.

Now I don't mean to offend the custom rod makers here, I am sure they can all make great Western style rods but Japanese jig rods are something quite different from regular East or West Coast rods. I only know of one custom builder experienced in these rods and that is paul of JPR Custom rods. There may be others who fully understand what's needed, lets hope so.

Apologies to anyone offended here.
thanks chris..i dont have "on the water" of kil either, but the the custom rods do get tested,
and i am sure if guys want OTR rods the JM is a good choice. in that price range
