Good timing for me to finally have my account authorized so I could submit my first post. Thought there might be a little bias against the west coast goin' on here.![]()
Fished today on the Reel Deal with Bobby Rice and with a special guest appearance made by RonZ. We made the long run from Pamet to the tuna grounds with the rest of the fleet. Lots of life with whales, birds and bait, but fishing was on the slow side. The three of us worked the RonZ's hard for the majority of the day. Just when it looked like we would finish the day empty handed, Bobby hooks up just off the bottom on a white RonZ jig, fished on a VSB250 and a 7' VS jig stick. Took the fish a minute to realize it was hooked before it ran. Bobby handed me the rod and I began to fight the fish, my first ever east coast bft. These fish pull harder than any fish I have ever had the chance to pull on. I worked the fish for a while, before handing off to Captain Bobby for a lesson in how to skillfully and patiently finish off these brutally strong fish. We had the leader on the rod no less that 6 times and the fish was at gaffing range twice before Ron was able to stick it after a 1:40 minute battle(we couldn't harpon it because it was not an obviously legal fish). We dragged it on board and it taped out a 76"! High fives all the way around. By the time we landed the fish it was time to make the run back to Pamet which did not seen so long with a beautiful "sale fish" inside the kill bag.
In just one day I learned a great deal about this wonderful fishery and this new to me technique of big game fishing on light spinning gear tackle. What a blast and what a challenge. Thanks to both Ron and Bobby.
The Reel Deal is just that...Bobby has a great riding and fishing boat, he worked his ass off, his gear is the best of the best, and most of all I appreciated his positive attitude and demeanor. I would recommend him highly.
Ron, thanks for your humorous storys and your coaching while I "tried" to land my first giant bluefin. Maybe next time I will be able to "close the deal".
It truly was a great day on the water and an experience I will never forget!
Thanks Again,
John
