van stall 200 for popping tuna?

Submited By mike garone mike garone is offline
I am thinking about building a tuna popping rod. I have a van staal 200 w/o the bail. Do you think this reel is capable of handling school tuna? I would load it with 50lb braid.

use your index finger to guide your line to the roller, you have to get use to it.

Not for beginner especially using braided line, you might loose a finger.JMO

As long as you keep you line tight the line won't come out.

So it looks like I'm going to go with the Cabo 80PTS or the Shimano Spheros 14000 and load it up on an OTI rod (assuming I can get one before next Wednesday!). 65# PP seems to be the consensus too. Want to be able to cast far and I think this is the way to go, although jigging would be nice too. If you guys think I'm crazy please speak up. For the money though it looks like that's a pretty good setup and will get me through a few days (man I hate the crap they have on charter boats)

The OTI Rod is a YFT Battle proven product..

If I had to choose between the Cabo and Spheros 14000FA..
get the Cabo 80 ..it's a smoother reel.

Nothing wrong with the Spheros ( I have 2) but for a few dollars more the Cabo 80 is a step up the food chain.

If you can ever swing it.. get you a Stella 20000 FA.. I love mine!

Oh, someday I'll swing the Stella, just had my 2nd kid so the wife isn't crazy about me dropping $$$$ on a once or twice a year gig.

Oh shoot, the OTI rods are sold out and I'm going next week!!! Argh. So what do you guys think about the Bar Bar rods? I've heard that the 10mm eyelet is too small. Gonna be throwing mainly topwaters (Yummee flying fish and a few poppers, maybe a swimbait, and a crainkbait too). The Bar Bar 30-60lb spinner looks like a good one. Any thoughts? I'm running out of time!!!
