The Ultimate Milkcrate

Submited By Gunsmoke Gunsmoke is offline
Below are some pictures from my newly fabricated "Ultimate Milkcrate." It measures 21" x 24" x 12" without handles. 21" x 29 1/2" x 12" with handles. It weights in at 206 pounds. If anyone is interested, I can post pictures of it during the fabrication process.

It is designed to hold 7 rods. The back side with 3 rod holders will hold up to 50W's. The front side with 4 rod holders will hold up to 30's. I designed it to take on long range tuna trips. I figure I need one 50W, one 30W, two jigging outfits, two large spinning outfits, and one bait rod.

Stainless steel eye hooks are behind the rod holders to secure the rods with bungee cords. Stainless steel screws were used throughout the fabrication. It should not move or shift no matter what size seas it will encounter. The rubber feet are solid 1 3/4" thick rubber. Handles will support 500 pounds each. Lee 90 degree medium size rod holders were selected because they are the most proven holder on the market. It is completely fiberglassed and coated with five coats of white epoxy paint.

The core of the crate is constructed with a buildup of 1 1/2" of 12 ply plywood. The plywood core was filled with concrete to gain some weight. I will need someone to help me lift this beast onto the boat. It's one very well constructed heavy milkcrate that will not have to be tied down to the deck. It should not shift or move what so ever.

That doesn't sound good. I'm kind of worried about it. The word "Ultimate" is a bit scary. I've been on the receiving end of his "Normal" pranks. Which to some people are life changing. I always expect the unexpected. This will be interesting. I'll have to keep my guard up and watch out. That mind of his is always working on something devious.

I received a phone call this morning. GS wanted to fit safety straps to rods on the milkcrate. I thought it was a trick. He helped me load up some equipment and off we went to the milkcrate. The whole time I was with him, I was anticipating some kind of prank.

We fitted some rods with 400# mono with crimps. They are a perfect fit for each rod. No way they can come out of the holder. We only left a 1/4" of play to remove the rods. I thought something was going to happen as he stopped off at a sports bar after we finished. Turns out he just wanted to drink and watch A&M play basketball on TV. Here's some pics of the crate with some rods.

Something that beautiful is enough to make

a grown man cry. TOB for sure. My bet is more than one person will with blow a hernia or slip a disc before this trip is all wrapped up. Good luck.

I'll admit, I tried to pick it off the ground with all the reels loaded by myself. I did it when GS was not looking. If I could have done it, I would have made some good money on a bet. I didn't make the bet.

It's impossible for one person with the rods in the crate. It's just to wide and your head hits the rods. I think it's close to 285 pounds loaded. Here's a few more, one with the travel covers on the reels. I truly think it can be hauled loaded up at 80MPH on the highway and not move. Probably get a few bugs on the rods after a long haul.

Pictures came out great. I think I might add 3 more holders to the front and to the back. I got all fired up blowing the dust off the crate yesterday. It's got some potential. There's no reason it couldn't haul 6- 80W's in addition to the other 7 holders.
