The Ultimate Milkcrate |
|
|
|
|
Below are some pictures from my newly fabricated "Ultimate Milkcrate." It measures 21" x 24" x 12" without handles. 21" x 29 1/2" x 12" with handles. It weights in at 206 pounds. If anyone is interested, I can post pictures of it during the fabrication process.
It is designed to hold 7 rods. The back side with 3 rod holders will hold up to 50W's. The front side with 4 rod holders will hold up to 30's. I designed it to take on long range tuna trips. I figure I need one 50W, one 30W, two jigging outfits, two large spinning outfits, and one bait rod. Stainless steel eye hooks are behind the rod holders to secure the rods with bungee cords. Stainless steel screws were used throughout the fabrication. It should not move or shift no matter what size seas it will encounter. The rubber feet are solid 1 3/4" thick rubber. Handles will support 500 pounds each. Lee 90 degree medium size rod holders were selected because they are the most proven holder on the market. It is completely fiberglassed and coated with five coats of white epoxy paint. The core of the crate is constructed with a buildup of 1 1/2" of 12 ply plywood. The plywood core was filled with concrete to gain some weight. I will need someone to help me lift this beast onto the boat. It's one very well constructed heavy milkcrate that will not have to be tied down to the deck. It should not shift or move what so ever. |

I'm not sure I want to borrow the Ultimate Milkcrate again. Last time the trip got canceled. You got me drunk at my send off party and I had to unload that sucker by myself. The worse part was loading it back up to return. That wasn't easy picking up off the ground into a pickup by yourself.
It think it's staying behind in May. That monster combined with 600 pounds of ice was a PITA. I'm also not taking all that ice. It sat in the back of my truck for about a week before I had time to mess with it. I also hate having NO rod holders for my stuff. Therefore, I might think about taking it. Hopefully there's a manly man on that trip to help me carry it up those steep steps to the upper deck. One advantage to taking it would be the fact that all rods could be assembled ahead of time and placed in the crate. Also, no breaking all the stuff down to haul back home. That thing doesn't move or shift in the back of the truck. |

I got the pics to post above.
In no way this box compares to Gunsmokes work of art. But it is an improvement over my origional plastic milk crate. I was over to Freeport about 2 weeks ago and the Big E was docked about a mile from it's normal slip. It was getting a little welding and painting work done. I sure hope they keep it around for the whole year. |

Yo Fishhead,
Don't be afraid to post the pics of your milkcrate. If it's an improvement from what you had then it must be OK. Heck, you might even give some other people ideas on how to improve their rod storage on a boat. If the Big E was a mile away getting some work done, that means two things. 1) General maintenance that was needed. 2) Just like a house, the new owner has in his contract that certain things must be fixed before the sale. People do walk a through on boats just like houses before buying. Either fix it or deduct an inflated amount from the agreed price. Sorry Fishhead56, I see where you put the pictures up on a previous post on this thread. Not Bad. Way better then those plastic milk crates. Just out of curiosity, what are the outside dimensions of your crate? Looks like your ready to go. You've got your bottom rigs, jigs, poppers and plenty of rods to go with your crate. Gook luck on your trip. Give us a report after your trip. Last edited by MrBill : 03-15-2007 at 04:48 PM. |

That looks good fishhead. You might want to buy a "Nantucket Bound" cooler keeper pad to put under your crate. It will keep it from sliding. If you can't find one in time for your trip, there is a rubber shelving liner that might work. Home Depot or Lowe's should have it. It comes in a roll.
Mrbill, please take it out for a ride again. It's bored sitting there in that dark corner. There will be no send off party this time. I have another surprise in mind. It's a good one. LMFAO, It will be a classic moment in your life. Could be my "Ultimate Prank"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just glad that you don't get bothered by my sense of humor. What is the rescheduled date for the trip? |
