Stella vs Saltiga |
|
|
|
|
I am currently in the market for a spinning reel to jig for tuna and to livebait for sharks (Makos, Blues, Threshers) off the Rhode Island and Massachusetts coast.
I am torn between the Saltiga Z 6500 Expedition and the Stella 20000. I normally fish all Shimano, but am looking to possibly expand my reel selection to include other brands/or getting a reel like the Stella and then upgrading later. I will be filling the reel with 80lb Power Pro or 80lb Jerry Brown. I am not worried about having enough line, as either will hold more than enough for my needs. I would also be interested to hear what rods you would recommend to pair with the reel. Check this out, he set the drag at 15kg, tied the line to a scale and when he mimed a fish hitting the line, the reel BLEW UP!!
this is right after the drag swung to 30-40kg before line came off the reel!I just began to want a saltiga less....stella, we're coming closer Reel Failure or real failure ? - Forum de Caranx.net. |

Accurate has done limited production runs of the TwinSpin in black. First try CharkBait, then hit some of the ForSale boards on Allcoast, or verticaljigging.com |

A couple Smith WGJ S56H's, a Trevala 58XXH, and a JigWrex S508. My favorite jigging rods, whether for spinning or conventional reels, are the Smith WGJ line. The JigWrex rods are super light for their ratings, just a bit hard to get here in the U.S. |

I can get the JigWrex rods online, from australia for about 353. The smith rods look really great and they aren't too expensive.
Have you fished the JigWrex JWS605? It's a 6' for up to 23kg line, and it's a 2pc w/ gimbal! Shimano JigWrex JWS605 : Campbells |

No, I have two of the JigWrex S508 rods and they match up very nicely with a Stella 8000.
If I could only have one rod it would be the Smith WGJ though. I have a couple of the spinning (S56H) and three of the conventional (50H) models and they have a taper that I really like. While I have a forest of other jigging rods, the WGJ gets to go on every trip regardless of which other rods come along. I compared the WGJ to the AMJ before making my decision and while many people like the AMJ, I personally preferred the WGJ line. No two people fish the same. |

The Smith WGJ rods are specifically made for jigging.....BUT, when the bite is on with other techniques, I've tied a 2/0 circle hook on and caught YFT on live bait, as well as successfully trolled small lures for dorado in Mexico. Jigging purists would faint if they'd seen what all I've done with my jigging rods.
I don't think I own a single rod other than my fly rods that have not at one time or another doubled as something other than what they were intended for. I don't think the Smith jigging rods are the best multi-purpose rods that you can find though. If you want a rod for a variety of types of fishing, I'd get something a bit less specialized. A Calstar 760L (without rollers) comes to mind. |
