I have been reading a few sites,along with this one for jigging and popping.
I have been an avid tuna fisherman,trolling, chunking,for many years,and have just started jigging in the last few years.I live in the new jersey area,and have a 27 Worldcat catamaran,and have access to canyons,for yf,and lf tuna,and inshore waters for bluefin.I use everol 12/20,on calstar custom rod ,700xh...and also having st croix musky being made now.
This year,I plan on doing some top water,popping,and just bought a new stella 10000,with the higher gear ratio,on a calstar 700h,
I want to get the 20000 spool,and have searched the web,and cannot find any.I can find all the smaller ones,but not larger.
Any ideas?....

For average tuna under 100 lbs, the line capacity of 10000 is good enough as any tuna under 100 lbs rarely take more than 100 yard on 20 - 22 lbs drag.
Were are you going to fish tun on poppers ? There are not many chances for popping tuna in NJ.

I have been going to a few areas on the 20 line,off south jersey(near atlantic city),and have been jigging tuna ,and at times,they are feeding near the surface,on calm days.
We anchor up on our spots,and chunk and jig,and did well.....the bf seem to be getting bigger every year,and we fish it from may to sept,producing some nice fish,nearing the 100 lb mark.
There are times we mark fish,and they will not touch the jigs for hours....so I think a different presentation,especially on calmer days,might be the ticket...
I also run to the canyons,and later in the year we see big bf (100 -200 lbs)breaking water,usually around the 40 line....have gotten them trolling bally's with hoods.....but I got to try this popping surface fishing

The only drawback,is the bluefish,are also feeding in the same areas,and you lose quite a few jigs sometimes.....

It is amazing you catch bluefin on 20 line regularly on jigs. I haven't had any luck on jigs when school bluefin were migrating fast inshore.
I usually start jigging bluefin out of Cape May, NJ, Maryland or Virginia in early July.

You are right, though we don't see much surface action in NJ, there are always chances we can encounter them on surface here and there. I am also looking for my first tuna on poppers in NJ.
