Penn Torque |

I don't believe it, I just got an electronic invoice from Charkbait. The Torque's shipped out today. The nice thing about Charkbait, is if you don't order any line on the reel, and you have the Captain's card, you get 40 bucks off each Torque. That 10% off really adds up. Problem is I have to give Mrbill one for losing a bet. In a couple of days, I'll see if they live up the icast award "Best of Show."

Which bearing are you talking about? Were the tolerances modified by the people with the gear problems or was it a factory thing? I still like the torque as it is very well constructed. If that gear problem happens to me, It's possible the reel will get visited by the sledge hammer and fire pit. Just in case anyone is interested, I got an email from Melton's today. They now have the Accurate 870C 2-speed in stock. $559.00 This should be a great jigging or conventional reel for fishing rocks in the 30 to 50 fathom range. They will be receiving the 665 2-speed and the 665W 2-speed sometime in January. They will retail for $579 and $599. I like the 665. Adding the 2-speed to this great reel should be a home run. The 665 wide version must be new. I've never seen a 665 wide in the single speed. The 665W-2speed might be a little heavy for jigging, but what a great little reel for fishing the Sparr rigs for school size YF's. |

It's the bearing on the left sideplate.
The tolerances were not modified by the anglers, but there was not a positive "stop" on the threads to restrict them within the correct parameters. It may be that it was accidental, or that the angler thought that loosening the bearing up would yield better freespool. |

Just got back from Alaska, doing the first field-testing of the still-developmental "Lever-Drag" Torque 300.
The really big halibut were not around for us, and the biggest caught by anybody was "only" 187 pounds, and the largest we caught was a "miniscule" 108 pounds. Halibut are definitely not tuna, and the "chickens" did not give the reel much of a workout, although it did feel very nice and has some startling innovations. Will be going out on a 7-day San Diego long-range on June 9 to give it a more thorough test on albacore, yellowtail and bluefin tuna. |

I'm not really at liberty to say too much yet, other than some of the technological innovations will blow your socks off.
Line capacities will be the same as the current star-drag Torques of the equivalent size, weights will be somewhat more. The 300-size Lever-Drag TRQ300LD may be in stores as early as October, and at some later point the smaller TRQ200LD and TRQ100LD sizes will follow. No idea about pricing at this time. |

Penn Torgue 200 is a like a tank. I really enjoyed to catch big yellowtail or hapuka(wreckfish) on this tiny reel on the NZ trip.
However, I need some clarifications from Penn. I could get only 20 - 22 lbs max drag from my Torgue 200 while Penn claims the max drag of the reel is 32 lbs. And also they claim the weights of Penn 300 and 200 are 29 oz and 20 oz, respectively. But the weight of my Torgue 200 is whopping 28 - 29 oz and I got the report that the weight of Torgue 300 is 37 oz ! I hope they are pure mistakes. |

Ksong, the weights you list are fairly good. I put a Torque 200 without line (empty) on a digital scale which is very accurate. The torque 200 came in at 28.3 ounces.
I also weighed a Torque 300 with line and a Torsa 30 with line. The Torque 300 came in at 37.2 ounces. The Torsa 30 came in at 32.04 ounces. Here are some pics. Gman, this pic of the Torsa 30 is the one I just bought from you. Thanks, it was in excellent condition. I could barely tell it was used at all. Last edited by MrBill : 05-19-2007 at 06:06 PM. |

For those that are curious about the size difference between the Torque 200 and the Torque 300, here are some pics.
Top View, side view and handle view. I personally like the size of the 300's handle over the 200. It fits my hand better than the small handle on the 200. The 200 is definitely smaller than the 300. I have yet to see a Torque 100. I assume they have had been distributed yet. |

In my opinion, Saltiga is simply the best among existing star drag reels. However you don't need such expensive reels for stripers and blues as there are many other cheap reels which can do the job for them. I got 35 lbs black drum with Shimano Dekota 300 last night and the other guy got a 70 lbs with Avet SX. ![]() |
