Penn Torque |

I don't believe it, I just got an electronic invoice from Charkbait. The Torque's shipped out today. The nice thing about Charkbait, is if you don't order any line on the reel, and you have the Captain's card, you get 40 bucks off each Torque. That 10% off really adds up. Problem is I have to give Mrbill one for losing a bet. In a couple of days, I'll see if they live up the icast award "Best of Show."

Ksong,
Yes, to be sure, 25 pounds of drag on a tiny reel like the TRQ100 is purely symbolic. However, there are an amazing number of people who insist that it be there. I just wanted to check/verify that the reel was inherently capable of hitting that number, what people do with it is going to be up to them. |

Since I started this thread, I might as well give a report on the Torque reel. I only own the 300 size. I have not had a problem with about 7 trips using the reel. The biggest fish to date was a huge AJ. It was around 70 pounds. It was caught on a 3-4 pound live bonito. I was more concerned about breaking the rod than reel failure. The rod was a 30# class super seeker. I think it was model # CJBF60.
That's really a good combination for this reel. Those new super seekers are awesome. Since we were in around 400 feet of water, it was a battle to bring the AJ to the surface with a 8 pound sash weight attached. I have found the drag on the torque to be quite smooth and even. So far, so good with the Torque. I would love to have it in a lever drag. The star wheel is just fine as long as your fingers don't have fish slime on them. For all those wondering about the max drag, the only answer I have is it has plenty. |

I made a mistake about the rod. I just looked at the invoice. It was a model
SS-CJBF65H which is a 40# class rod. The rod was bent almost 180 degrees for about 45 minutes. Not really what I normally use for bottom fishing, but it was close at hand and looked like it wanted to come out of the holder for some action. |

I'm guessing about a year from now the lever drag Torque will be available. The reel has a stacked drag system in the left side and fully disengaging spool and pinion for incredible free spool (pat. pending). Here's a Pic.

Just wanted to follow up on field-testing the TRQ100 aboard a 7-day San Diego long-range trip aboard the Searcher.
Fished the TRQ100's on 8-foot 800L cork-tape handle rods with a 30-pound mono topshot over 40-pound spectra with live sardines, Tady #4/0 light jigs and Sumo #C2 heavy jigs. The reels perfomed far beyond expectations, with the drag and cranking power amazing for a reel of its' size. On the 2 reels, over 30 yellowtail from 15 to 35 pounds and a stray 20-pound yellowfin tuna were caught. Even when one of the larger-grade 35-pound Cedros Island yellowtail sulked deep, the reel cranked on it almost like a 2-speed big game reel in "low". Our California yellowtail are first cousins to amberjack. Casting was excellent, and although I rarely use mag cast controls like the one on the TRQ100, I did like the thumbing flange on the spool. In overall size, it is the same line capacity as the 525MAG, but of course much beefier. Although we did not catch any albacore, I moved the reels to 800XL's with 20-pound topshots when we tried for them, and once they were properly balanced on the rods with line and rigging attached, you could not tell they were any heavier. Line capacity was 250 yards of straight 20-pound Big Game mono or 200 yards of 40-pound spectra and a 125 yard topshot of 20-pound Big Game. Adjust the capacity as you may prefer. I would say that the reels will fish anything from 15 to 30 pound mono either straight or as a topshot, but anything heavier would get very "wiry" on such a small reel. For those who like straight braid, the extreme strength and drag power should easily allow use of up to 65-pound test, and as I mentioned earlier, I was able to get more than 24 pounds of max drag. |

Thanks for the follow up Tuna North!
I'm really stuck on deciding between the Torque 200 vs. the 870 2 speed! Hopefully Kil put his 870-2speed thru a work out and will report. I think he has to stop fishing for a few hours first to do a report! ![]() |
