Max drag on Cabo 80?

Submited By lite-liner lite-liner is offline

Brand: Quantum   Model: cabo 80/90   Types: Spinning
Hey all. just wondering about this reel for a 50# tuna spinner.
I was about to buy the Fin-Nor, but after reviewing the line roller
pics, I'm hesitant. Obviously, I don't have the $$ for a Stella, or this
wouldn't be an issue.
On the other hand,I wonder if the line-roller bushings on the Fin-Nor
are Delrin, like the shaft spacer.
Input needed!
tight lines

I have a Shimano Spheros 14000, didnt really use it alot on my trip, but for the couple hits that I got it worked, and it casted nicely.

Kevin

ps- I think a few guys have experience with some yyft on this reel, hopefully they will add their .02

Kevin. that spheros will shell once you get a large one on.. the stock drags are crap..... www.smoothdrags.com . Call and ask Dawn to send you some carbon fiber drags....

How much do the Cabo 80's run? Think finding a rod to match that amount of drag would become the issue... a custom only???

Hey Ronnie, the 80's are $209 @ BPS. I figure it'll hold 500y of 50#
spectra. But I can't find info on drag abilty, or how the line lays on the spool
line-roller brg or bushing, etc.
I've heard & seen good things about the Cabo 80, but I need more info to make the right descision. this reel will be for my
SeaMagic 5.5' 50# spinner

LiteLiner ......

I have a Quantum Cabo 80 and found it on the i-net for $197...

I filled it with just under 300 yards of 65# spectra and then topped it off with about 80 yards of 50# mono. I put it on a Daiwa Saltiga 30-50# rod. The reason for that is I do more AJ fishing in 200' - 300' of water than I do YFT fishing and I felt the 50# mono would get it done without having to get to the braid.

I haven't used it yet but in toying with it outside I have put some serious pressure on it checking my knots, etc., and it really seems sturdy.

My Quantum Cabo 60 has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years and when a poster that went on TBB 06 said he caught several 70# class YFT on a Cabo 80 on that trip I was sold.

I called Quantum and they told me they don't test the big spinners for maximum drag. They were quite helpful to me on several issues.

I also have a Spheros 14000 with the same line setup that I've never had a chance to use but I think it's everything Ronnie says it is.

Hope this helps.

Bobby

Hey Guys, I fished the Cabo 80 on the TBB 06' trip and it was a very nice reel. The drag was set at 15lbs but on the first 65lb YFT I tightened it up because this fish thought he was bigger than he really was. After the second YFT I checked the drag and it was pulling 20lbs and there was still some more there. I plan to add this reel to my arsenal this year.

the spheros is crap without the drag upgrade...... that is the key to bringing it to life.
