Good Spinning for Schoolies |

Trying to decide whether I should buy a new spinner for the January Tuna Trip.
Currently using an Okuma Epixor EB80. Will this reel handle YFT at all? Really thinking of getting into a Penn 950/9500. Any opinions of both would be great! Even a some uprgrades to my reel would work??? Otherwise I basically need a rig that will do the trick! |

An extreme case is down in Puerto Vallarta where they caught a 327pound yellowfin on 80 pound braid,100 leader 327lber - Avet JX style - Bloodydecks.com The cabbage key web site says the JX will hold Line Capacity 280/30 400/25 mono. or 475/50 300/65 braid And I think Eddie at cabbage (nice guy and very good service)puts a 80 yard topshot on the JX So you are looking at least 350 yards with 65 braid and around 500 with 50 braid and a 50 top shot. Realistically 20 pounds of (full) drag on the Lx/Jx is pushing it right to the limit. The lever gets tough to move and you notice the handle getting harder to turn as well. (Not in low gear) So it really doesn’t warrant any more than 60-pound test. And is more like a great 40-50 pound test reel. I have only caught few yellowfin but I did get a 150 pound fish out of Venice in 5500’ of water. (Mars or Ursa) The fish made a big first run more away then down, and then he just hung out down there around 200’ right below the 150’ thermocline; by the sounder and the amount of line off. I would pull him up and he would go right back down to the cooler water, but never sounded towards the bottom. The captain had straight 80 mono on a 50w, and no way did it have 20 pounds of drag. I feel like with a responsive captain and somebody who pushes their equipment, that my 150 pounder could have been caught on the JX. With any tuna around 100 pounds, which is big for the floaters, you should not have any problem. |

Just saw on bloodydecks for 90 bucks an aftermarket adjustable mag breaking like I see on the beach in the outerbanks, NC. This would be better than what I did.
adding magnets and casting and all that stuff - Bloodydecks.com Quote from guy on bloodydecks. Hi, I fish the surf with two Avets, one lx and one jx both two speed. They are set op with adjustable mags.and cast from 10' to 350' with 8ozs.and bait and no backlash. The adjustable feature permits adjustment for varibles wind casting Wgts,Ect.the cost is $70.00 you install $90.00 installed. Try Bill Thomas @ Custom Rods and Custom Reels If you do not connect let me know and I will give you phone no. I fish Rat Bch. in the south bay daily if you want to try one let me know and we can hook up. Mistered310 Here is the touneyment casting reel shop that is doing the conversion. Shimano may have one upped this casting w/o backlashing thing. Have you seen the DC Trinidads? 22 lb of drag on the 30.
Trinidad DC Think there's one on Ebay already. Fred

I'll check more into this for sure. I guess it costs a little more but for adjustment without dissassembling |

SpecialK, I own a JX a LX 2-sp, Trriniadad 30 and 40, Daiwa Saltist 30T, I find that the Avets are the easiest to have overruns. Having said that I need to also tell you that I love the reels jigging and bait use. I not saying that they are bad to cast with but need more thumb than others metioned. To have line cap. for larger tuna you might be using mainly spectra, I find that over runs with braid, at night with the bite on, is a fisherman worst nightmare. The spinning rig allows the angler to throw all braid with a short leader of mono or flor., and all but removes the possibly of overruns. But a person has to make choices what is the most important to them. Ease of casting? Great cranking power of a covn. reel, or as you said one of each. Hope that you find what suits you, and you have a great trip. I know when you get back you will have a better idea of what you like and don't like. I just started fishing the gulf and I didn't want to spend alot of cash on one of the "big three" spinners, so I got a 950m Penn I know they won't hold-up forever, but it let me see if I wanted to invest in a higher priced spinner. I did love the spinner for casting because you can just let it rip and not worry about the overruns. You can't grind the fish with spinners,so the pump and wind is every important. Good Luck, Bruce

"I am confused with that post? I don't own a 2 speed but I also don't know of one that would replace(even close) the castabilty of a spinning. "
Special K: That was confusing. What I meant was, in a pinch you could use a 20K or an SR-30 for your only rig. Russ
