Good Spinning for Schoolies

Submited By SpecialK SpecialK is offline
Trying to decide whether I should buy a new spinner for the January Tuna Trip.
Currently using an Okuma Epixor EB80.
Will this reel handle YFT at all?
Really thinking of getting into a Penn 950/9500. Any opinions of both would be great!
Even a some uprgrades to my reel would work???
Otherwise I basically need a rig that will do the trick!

I tried to find an alternative to expensive Stella, Saltiga or Twin Spin for tuna, but I couldn't. Cabo reel has the least problems reported, based on the reviews.
My conclusiong is to buy quality reels as much as you can afford, as there are many quality rods with reasonble prices.

LX reel can be a good choice as you said you are a good caster.
But don't do magging the Avet.

I thought the Avets had a "cast control" which I thought was similar to a bait caster in one way or another... Is that not so???????

I have used that reel too, landed a 50lbs YFT without a sweat.
It handled it kind of TOO well, in fact now I am using the size 55 with 65lb PP (the 80 seemed an overkill).

Avet calls their first small click up on the drag lever a cast control. If the reel's drag is set to exactly the right setting you can get some use from it. A little less drag, and the first click does nothing. A little more drag and the first click will ramp up too fast and stop a cast. It's not adjustable without actually adjusting the drag. Not really very effective IMO. On reels with as true cast control, the drag is set and then the cast control is set independent of the drag. On Avets they go hand in hand or not at all.

That is what I thought. I am under the impression that they are very castable now though. i had cabelas(didnt know they carried avet) load up an mx which was the only one they had. we took it in the parking lot and tried it a few times. it is not a bait caster but, i can see how, with a few magnets they, can cast up to 80-90 yards...

If you wanted a reel just for throwing poppers, I would get the JX instead of the LX. Same drag and gears, but you will have a much easier time leveling the line on the narrow spool. The JX still holds allot of line but the narrow spool will have less weight and therefore cast better with less spool momentum. And of course mag it, if you want a farther casting reel.
Kil, why not? I am interested in the downsides? Besides something to possibly rust if you don't coat them.
