Fin Nor OFS95 - The Breaking Point |
Alright guys, I opened up my Busted Fin Nor OFS95, the main gear broke, all the way around where it mounds to the reel handle.
I have taken some really good High-Res pics but left my Digi-Cam pic at work, I will get it tomorow. The gear broke because it is CAST! NOT MACHINED! Fin-Nor needs to correct this issue ASAP, if they are expecting people to fish these reels with heavy drags, the gears need to be able to support the drag capabilities as well. -Patrick |

Ok so I am in Miami fishing last weekend and realize I left our other Stella spinning reel at home by mistake so I went to a tackle shop and picked up the Fin Noir 65 size reel, it was cheap so I filled it up with 65# braid and off we went. I was fully expecting this reel to break, I even told the sales guy at Captain Harry's I would probably see him later with a broken reel LMAO as he said I was crazy.
My stella, my son and the 65 went out and found big Amberjack and to my surprise, the reel held up fine. It will probably break sometime in the near future but we got our $135 dollars out of it the first day. The captain I go with actually uses them for kings Mahi etc and said he hasnt had any issues with them I intend on breaking it in NC this month |

Hello to all.... Its a pleasure to be have found this forum...as well as this topic. This is my first post (hope I get a nice welcome after I give my opinion)... I have fished since I was a kid around the shores of Puerto Rico. and find myself turning 36 soon. I've fished hard over the years and have used the old penns and Fin-Nors all my life. I've been deep jigging for about 3 years now and used my 9500 penns with plenty of success after they had caught multiple blue marlin and tuna that showed up in my white marlin spread (before turning into a jigging freak due to petrol costs). Those reels performed very well. I also used Penn internationals (all sizes for marlin)and the smaller 550ss series (cast body) for sailfish. They did great. As for Fin-Nor, my dad has an old (70's) fin-nor spinning reel which he live baited yellow fin with... an excelent reel as well.
However, I recently purchased a Penn 950SSM that lasted 3 outings (internal handle problem-porous brass). I have a friend that also had problems with his new Offshore FinNor as well (teeth break in main gear)... These reels that were once made in the US at a higher cost, suddenly became very affordable and made in China. For this reason, I still have my " old faithful" 9500ss fishing as my back ups... They serve as back-ups after I purchased a 20k Stella last year. I think you get what you pay for. It is an awesome reel.. I dare to say it is the best reel I've ever owned. |
