Daiwa 50 Saltiga two speed lever drag reels

Submited By lawman lawman is offline

Brand: Daiwa   Model: STT50   Types: Conventional
Looking at adding two offshore reels for tuna/shark for northeast waters. I have been looking at this model. Concern, this model does not have enough line capacity for 80 lb. line. Specs. 50lb-220 yards=mono. 50lb-630lb=braid. I could use 50lb. but I am new to the offshore game. Will 50lb. line be sufficient for trolling tuna, fishing for shark. Once again, northeast waters?

Lawman from CTF? Glad you found your way here, too! If you got one of those, get the BG version, 80# braided line with a mono topshot. Solid or hollow braid is your choice; you can also do the solid and splice the hollow onto it for a loop to loop topshot connection. Very simple to do; all of my trolling reels have hollow core with a mono topshot on them except for my 30N, haven't spooled it yet! The 50 you are referring to is similar to a Saltiga or Saltist 50 star drag; ie a much smaller reel. You will want at least a 20 or 30 size reel made for trolling. Those are more of an inshore reel IMHO!

Daiwa Saltist BG20 or 30, or Daiwa SLT30-2SPD, Quantum Aruba 20 or 30, Tyrnos 20 or 30, Penn VSX30, etc would all work, some less expensive than others! Look for a reel made for trolling, that reel is simply too small/not beefy enough for trolling. As a jigging or pitchbait reel, OK, but not much more than that!

CraZy8 has the Quantum Aruba 20 and likes it.

Lawman,

For trolling for Northeast Tuna (I assume you mean Bluefin) I would strongly recommend against a small reel like that. The reels that are mostly used in the Northeast for that kind of duty are reels like Shimano TLD 50 2 speed (which is small for that application), Shimano Tiagra 50 and 80, Penn Internationals, FinNor Santiago 50 and 50W. Reels like that. I don't know that a smaller reel like a Saltist or Saltiga is going to make you happy for that kind of work.

Daiwa's Saltist Big Game STTLD30T 2spd should be more than adeuate for trolling and sharks. 400yds100#spectra & 80#mono TS

For trolling these waters like already stated you need at least a 30W and thats if your gonna back with braid. If your gonna use mono you need a 50W or better.

Thanks for the input. I'm swaying towards the Shimano or Penn. (Used of course). The price was right for the Daiwa STT50LD-2 speed. $340.00 new. But once again I don't think it will standup to sharking.
