AVET REELS GET THUMBS DOWN BY CAPE COD GUIDES

Submited By HUNTER II HUNTER II is offline
Went to a Striped Bass / Tuna Seminar today and had a chance to talk with two of the top guides on Cape Cod. Both independantly had the same mantra regarding AVET Reels - avoid them at all costs. Their basic concern was in the bearing that are used are subject to premature failure. Their other concern was with the drag systems in that AVET recommends dry drag, but the reels really need a wet (greased) drag to perform at their top level.

I was ready to buy an HX for jigging tuna and I'm still leaning in that direction but I am going to look a little harder before I leap.

Any opinions/experiences with AVETs in general and the HX in particular would be appreciated.

I have an Avet SDS 50 and I love the reel. Avets aren't perfect, but as stated above, most reels have flaws. Avets always seem to come under attack for their weaknesses while significant issues with more expensive reels are often taken with less criticism.

Hello group my name is fishhead,
my wife suggested I attend one of these sessions.

I have 4 MX, 3 blue, 1 silver, 1 LX blue, 1 EXW blue, I have placed them in the garage, closet and even in a rod rack in the master bedding room. and have not had a fishing related failure or loss of color yet,,,,

Although when taken to saltwater I do atribute these reels to having caused some damage to fish and fishing rods.

I have not salwater fished in 8 days.
One step at a time......We will see what tommorow brings....

I really like my pro Avets too. The 50SDS, 30's and the 4/0's have been really good reels for me. I'm not quite as happy with the smaller reels just because of the bearing binding as you approach max drag. Still, I've never had an Avet failure. They're good reels.
Still, it comes down to you pay your money and make your choice. Avet makes a reliable product for the money.

Gee Scott, you had me worried!

Funny how some people don't know the difference between poor construction and occasional failures.

Those fibro patients drive me nuts.

I agree. It is hard to beat Avet on their bang for the buck. Shoot, avet makes the LX 2 speed and I haven't heard of shifting problems with the avet. I have heard of shifting problems on 2 other brands of jigging reels. Why don't the other manufacturers take such a licking when their 2 speed jigging reels don't function correctly?

By the way, I am very neutral on reels. I buy what I think will serve its purpose the best for the right price. If anything, I am partial to shimano.

I love my LX6/3. I like greasing the drag however. Was bummed to learn that Avet is so insistant I not fish with greased drags that they have started to glue the washer to the reel.

Avet's are great reels

I also have an Avet LX 6/3 2 speed reel. It's been great. I use a wet drag system just like Alan Tani suggests. It's as smooth as silk.

I would bet (without knowing their specific issues) that the reason they don't like Avet's is because they are striper fisherman and need a reel that they can cast long distances. Lever drag reels aren't great casting reels. Yes, you can cast them but not like an Abu Garcia or other star drag reel.

As far as pre-mature bearing failures, that is a maintenance issue. If you fish your reels every day and don't clean them often then your going to have maintenance issues. Avets are like Rolex watches. They have to be serviced. If you want a cheap throwaway reel then buy a Shakespeare.

Good luck with your decision. There are lots of great reels on the market today. I happen to own an Avet, Shimano TLD, Daiwa Saltist and Penn Special Senator 6/0. All great reels with very different qualities and applications.
