AVET REELS GET THUMBS DOWN BY CAPE COD GUIDES

Submited By HUNTER II HUNTER II is offline
Went to a Striped Bass / Tuna Seminar today and had a chance to talk with two of the top guides on Cape Cod. Both independantly had the same mantra regarding AVET Reels - avoid them at all costs. Their basic concern was in the bearing that are used are subject to premature failure. Their other concern was with the drag systems in that AVET recommends dry drag, but the reels really need a wet (greased) drag to perform at their top level.

I was ready to buy an HX for jigging tuna and I'm still leaning in that direction but I am going to look a little harder before I leap.

Any opinions/experiences with AVETs in general and the HX in particular would be appreciated.

Avets are not cheap, they cost a preety high amount for a fishing-line-winder-on-er. That makes me mad when people do not realize that anything over 100.00$ to wind on fishing is crazy!!!

I've been using two SX models since they were introduced and last season picked up two additional "2-speeds". Never a problem with any. I've handled YFT with the MXL's 6/4's quit easily as well. Well built for the money~now mine don't get the use as a guide would put them through but for the average joe they're fine reels.
