50w question

Submited By Depraved Depraved is offline

Brand: Others   Model: avet, penn, shimano, other   Types: Conventional
im looking to buy 2 50wides for trolling and chunking. I cant decide on which brand to buy but i was gonna run 300yards of 130lb hollow core and rest 80lb topshot and it would be used maybe 2-3 times per year. So i guess my question is which 50w has the least amount of maintance needed and also which brand can i get the most out of? Thanks for looking!

most everyone would probably say tiagras but since you said, "and chunking", and you're gonna be using braid backing, i'll say go with the Penn 50VSX insteada 50Ws...........

yds/test
650/150 Braid
50/130 mono Topshot

with it's hi-drag capabilities it'll whoop most anything saltwater could ever throw-at-it

and being used only 2-3-times a year they should last you a lifetime w/o any maintance other'n washing down with freshwater after every use

The Alutecnos has the highest capacity of any of the 50Ws out there, and is also the smoothest...the only 50W that puts out more drag than it is the Avet.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Penn 50VSX, Shimano Tiagra 50WLRSA or Avet Pro EXW50/2. The Alutecnos doesn't have the drag the others do unless you go to the Long Range series, but then you are talking $900.
Try to pick each one up, turn the handle, play with the gear changing mechanism, etc. and see which one you like the best.

Uhhh, the Alutecnos has more drag than both the Penn and Tiagra. The Alutecnos maxes at around 44 +- a couple lbs...The Tiagra maxes around 38.

My little Gorilla 12C maxes at 40!

EDIT: Of course, I'm talking about the Albacore 2speed

The regular Alutecnos 50 2S has 23 at Strike and 33 at Full. The Long Range 50 2S is 38 and 44. Also that reel weighs 82 ounces and costs $900.

Penn 50VSX - 36/42, 76oz., $550
Shimano Tiagra 50WLRSA - 35/44, 86oz., $650
Avet Pro EXW50/2 - 50/57, 67oz., $600

These are all the company stats. The only one I can personally attest to is the Avet. And it does what it claims.
But, like I said, any one of these reels will do what you need very well. I considered all and the drag was a moot point as I don't think I will ever use more than 40 pounds of drag and then only from a swivel rod holder so it did not matter.

i like it and only mentioned it cuz it's prolly the least bulky of all mentioned and it can be bot for $444 (if ya know where ta look)

wide 2-speed reels are bit awkward imo....... what with being so wide and having the handle offset so far off to the side of the center o'gravity

fine for chairs and full harnesses but i figgered if he was gonna use braid.......... go with something made for braid

i don't have one but i did buy a 30VSX ($403) for chunking....... ain't had a chance to use it yet tho

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the "Long Range" the the Albacore 2 speed are the same reels. It's the One speed you're talking about that had less drag.
