2-Speed Chunking/Bottom Fishing Reel

Submited By Jason4606 Jason4606 is offline
I'd like to have a dedicated bottom fishing/chunking rod for GOM and I already have an unused TLD20 2spd w/80lb braid in the closet. Really want to stick w/ 2-spd, and it looks like the TLD20II ratings of 22lb @ strike and 30lb @ full would be pretty decent. But I also read NOT to fish these over 18-20lbs due to chance of frame breakage. This probably wouldn't be my first choice if I had it to do over again. But I already have it, so is it worthy of going on a new rod?

I'd rather just buy a rod and go fish. But I really don't want to crank down the drag to full and have half a reel fly through the guides on a brand new rod either!!

If I drop this TLD on eBay, what 2-speed reel would you get? Penn 16VSX looks pretty sporty... Also considering Tiagra, Daiwa SLD 20/30 2-spd, Avet HX/Pro30. What do you think?

Thanks!
Jason

Guys I have a 50 lrsa and have not had any problems with it. Great strong reel. The reason that I have it is because it was on sale over at cabelas bargain cove and paid 239.00. Great 2 speed for bottom fishing.

I have 2 16vsx's and each have a little over 600yds of 80hc with 80lb leader. It gets a little tight depending on the knot you use to connect the main to leader unless it's spliced.

Do any of the worthy candidates have infinite antireverse and/or defeatable clicker?

Penn and TLD have selectable (loud or soft) clicker, but you can't turn it off completely. And neither have infinite anti-reverse. I seem to remember reading that Accurate uses two stacked anti-reverse bearings so it has infinite anti-reverse, but what about bait clicker?

What about Tiagra, Avet HX (or 30 or 4/02), any others? If 665 or HX are enough reel, then it might make sense to build as a heavy jigging/chunking/bottom combo.

Thanks again!
Jason

The Accurate 665W is old school; it is either on or off. When off, the reel is totally silent.

The biggest drawback for the HX was that it just does not have the drag you need to fish bottom structure or rigs. I want a lot of drag if I am AJ or grouper fishing. You have difficulty cranking the HX handle on settings higher than 30#.

I'm using a Tiagra 16 for jigging.
