I noticed there are some changes in line capacity, weights and gear ratio between old 10000/20000 model and new 10000/20000 model.
line capacity There is a slight increase of line capacity on the new 10000. While old 10000HG can hold 160 meter of PE8 (80 lbs), the new 10000 XG and PG can hold 186 meter of PE8. And old 20000 and new 20000 models has the line capacity with 350 meter of PE8. reel weights The most noticeable deduction of reel weights is Stella 10000 model. While the reel weight of old Stella 10000HG is 32 oz, the new model's is only 22.22 oz. The weight of new 20000 model is also reduced by 2 oz from 32 oz to 30 oz. gear ratio While old 10000HG's grea ratio is 6.0:1, new 10000XG is 5.8:1 and 10000PG is 4.9:1. There is no change of gear ratio bewteen old 20000 and new 20000. Shimano also introduced new Stella 18000HG. It looks like a high gear ratio reel in capacity of 20000. I belive there have been some design changes to the shape of the spool as far as the top portion of the spool beging a little more flared to allow for easier casting of the braided lines...(less wind knots).
Tight lines. |

I agree. It's hard to fix an old "Standby Workhorse" that keeps going and going and going. Look at the Penn Senator line. It's still the number one selling offshore reel in the world. I don't own one, but there is not a port anywhere in the world that still doesn't use them on a daily basis. They are easy to fix and parts are easy to obtain. It's Penn's bread and butter. I'm still bottom feeding for a Twinspin 20. One of these days, I'll pick one up for a bargain. Meanwhile, my Stella FA's won't be sold. I don't see a flood in the used FA market since they are so well respected. If anything, the price of the used FA's might increase since to new Stella's are about 20% higher. |

"wind-knots" are a result of line being loose on the spool, not a function of the shape of the spool. If more people would learn to close the bail manually in addition to making sure the line is tight on the spool (no sloppy winding when there is no fish on) their "wind-knot" problem would disappear entirely.
I have braided line on everything from old beat up Penn Spinfishers to every current Stella from the 5000-20,000 and have not had a "wind-knot" in years. |

i just noticed now that there was an 18k size it's almost the HG version of the 20k with the exception of the 320yd line cap for 25lb rather than 30

MrBill, I'm doing the same thing, it would be best if we collude. Would be a shame to drive up the price for each other. ![]()

At 22 ounces, 44 pounds of drag, 4.9 gear ratio, and 101 cm (nearly 40 inches) line retrieve (stella 20K PG is 104cm line retrieve), the new 10000PG looks very tempting to me since I still don't have a stella
. I would think about loading it with PE6 line and I think it would be a stout popper and jigging reel with enough line capacity for virtually every surface tuna in the GOM.

ummmmm not to mention any other major fish, grouper, AJ, shark, billfish. The stella reels are very versatile reels. I've even caught Marlin with them. You can kick major ass with any of the stella reels. I just for the life of me cant justify spending that when i have this years models working perfect |
