Yeah, if the boat stayed out longer then maybe time spent bottom fishing instead could be spent trolling the blue water and searching for floatsum, similar to the Red Rooster, and a marlin, sailfish, wahoo and dorado could add some excitement. One time several years ago, I was on a overnight charter out of Alabama, about 50-75 miles out, during the middle of the day we trolled up wahoo after wahoo, very good eating, maybe better than YFT. With a beam as wide as BIG-E there is enough room for many anglers to put out a spread, just a little coordination from the crew. Just a dream, if you're out for 3-4 days and the fish boxes have plenty of fish, and you're already in prime bluewater, why not take turns while some of the guys who fished all night sleep?

the trick is to sleep while the boat moves between spots. most of the time it is a 3 hour or so run from some of the floaters to the bottom fishing areas. by doing this i am able to fish all night and all the daytime stops....rick

What you wish for may be a reality. It is not outside the realm as the boats out of SD have troubles filling their trips. However, who would take the chance of moving a long range boat to TX unless they were assured of a captive audience that would be willing to spend the bucks to do a long range trip. It would also have to be a 12 month deal to make it work. What is the possibilities of doing a long 12-15 day trip? Where would the boat go and what would they catch. I would assume that this would involve getting permits to fish Mexican waters as well. What fisheries are within a 1000 miles range of port assuming that Mexican permits could be obtained?

3-5 days trip might be possible but anything longer than 5 days might run into weather problem.
Gulf doesn't have an island where the boat can take shelter like in the pacific. For 3-5 days trip, 200-300 miles range will put the boat in the tuna ground but Mexican water sounds interesting. bring it on Mel, i will be up for 5 days trip or longer. |

I have only been on the Dolphin Dock boats for long trips. The little dolphin on the rope out in front pulling the boat around cant make it in to bottom fish and back out the floaters before dark. Or is it they dont wan to burn the fuel? Either way they troll and then fish AJs, rainbow runners and the like. Thought on islands. How far is it across the gulf? although Cuba may not be friendly to that kind of thing and how far down to the Caribean? (I know I cant spell.) Then there is also a better sword fishery here and tile fish. Last edited by oldtrackster : 10-26-2008 at 09:33 PM. |

a 3+ day trip would only be worth it if you're targeting 150+lb tuna.
honestly guys, you should really do overnighters as they do up north. cheaper, quicker trips and most guys do the 52 hr trips for tuna anyway, not snapper/aj/grouper. the boat could easily steam to boomvang/nancen and back in 24 hours. just my opinion, but in good weather season you could do several of these per week as opposed to a handful of 52-hours per month. Brett I have yet to see the overnighters up north catch the size and amount of fish that the Big E does on a 52hr trip. The Big E does run 30hr trips too, sounds like you will be one of there biggest supporters. You also need to remember that the owner of the Big E has several crew boats so the fishing boat is not his largest money maker, more like a hobby boat for him. d-a

i understand but $750 for 2 nights of fishing is enough to get out of a lot of people's price range. the 30-hour trips are good, i agree and plan to do some next year. the more efficiently people can get out for tuna the more repeat customers youll get. with one night of fishing, it wouldnt be so annoying when people fill the fish boxes with 5lb blackfin....
this was a horrible canyon year, i'm sure you know that. there is about 50xs the fishing pressure up north as well. if we had the amount of legit boats and fisherman wanting to fish tuna then you'd have the same result. i totally agree the yellowfin fishing here is very good...which is all the more reason to do overnight trips - you've got a better chance of getting good fish. |
