No BRAIDED LINE!?!?

Submited By lawrence91 lawrence91 is offline
HMM, i just got my little itinerary from Dolphin Docks for guidelines for what to bring on my trip and in BIG asterisk it said NO BRAID, i am not sure how i am supposed to jig without braid? plus my reels are pretty much loaded with the stuff. does anyone know what the deal is? or do they check everyones reels b4 they board?
ok has anyone been on their boats and fished with braid line? i know this may sound silly but it is bothering me. let me know ASAP!!!! Thanks for the help anyone!!

I went with braid for jigging on an 80 hour in october, I asked the head deckhand he said they really don't care, but if it gets tangled just be prepared for it to be cut. They also prefer a decent sized topshot of mono or floro. But they had no problem with me fishing with it. And after Jigging with mono and jigging with braid, I'd rather cast net bait than try to jig with mono again. 90% of my hits were on the drop and with mono I couldn't feel it, braid I could tell instantly.

well the trip overall wasnt too bad. 6-8 footers the way out, calmed down to 4-6 while we were out fishin and like 0 to half footers the whole way in. we (the boat), 31 guys? did pretty ok. we ended catching like 200 BFT about 6 YFT only one up to about 60, the rest were small. the boat never really mentioned braid...one deckhand said he liked the stuff but was hard to untangle, which it is. me personally didnt do so great, the combination of workin a 12hr day friday, drivin all night, then the diesel fumes, and the rough ride out, i was pukin' my guts out. i only ended up with 5, 3 on a seven seas darter, and 2 on a shubiki. the topwater bite wasnt too hot.
pros: the hands were very helpful, food was good
cons: looooonnnngg ride out 12hrs, cabin smelt horrible, capt didnt really tell us where he was markin fish
for the price it was a pretty good trip.

some of the comments are pretty discouraging. no ice??? thats not good. that should be resolved.

not telling you where fish are being marked (or not being marked) is also silly. I've been on a boat where that happened before. Didn't make a lot of sense.

regarding allowing braid - its 2009. braid is here to stay. some boats need to get on board or they'll be passed by.

I asked b4 my last trip, one of the captains I spoke to said, "as long as you have about 100' of mono topshot, it should be no problem" when I went on that trip, there was a guy fishing braid right to the lure/hook/leader.....nobody told him anything....it's prolly an OLD rule that just hasn't been updated/deleted from the "rules" yet

Well there was ice this time, I wish the capt would have told us exactly the fish were marked, then the metered braid would have been more helpful

Man what length trip you going on?? If it 24hr or longer no problem braid is needed and dont think they will bother you.. 8-12hr is for tourist and braid will be a problem.. Fishermen can move and dodge lines with fish on, the tourist on board for the 2nd time fishing cant.. I dont use braid on a 8-12hr.. 24-80 braid is a must..

My first trip on their boat I took my pen 750 full of braid and they weren't to happy when they noticed when we were a couple of hours off shore, but they let me use it. They just don't want a bunch of green horns there with braid. I told them it wasn't my first rodeo and that I would not cause any problems, which I didn't, I think I was the first one to limit out on reef fish, then I finished off my girl friend's limit soon after. They guy next to me and his son should not have had braid, they could not tell when they had hit bottom and would not stop letting their line out and kept getting tangled up with every one and had to have their lines cut multiple times. There is good reason for them not wanting line, especially on those old rods they have on that boat, as long as you show them that you are no green horn, you shouldn't have a problem.

As a diver, I'd like to chime in here, One of the main reasons they don't like fishing braid is because divers often share the wrecks and reefs, and it is hell to untangle yourself when wrapped up in spectra at 120'. Really plays havoc with your bottom time.
