Thoughts
In the Northeast, shark fishing for large Makos and Threshers is a huge business and creates some of the largest tournaments. In the gulf they are considered a pain in the ass. I firmly belive that if charters actually targeted them in the gulf with NE techniques it would be huge. Noone really does becuase of how great the tuna fishery is however the Makos two largest food sources swordfish and tuna are both prevelent down there. Every year boats in Venice hook up to huge Makos but get cut of becuase they are caught on tuna chunking rigs

we hooked one bottom fishing during the day at a rig bout 100miles offshore i figure, spooled the rig, and it got off before the deckies could spllice it onto a two speed, pretty cool tho it made two big jumps, one of the deckies said it weighed proly 500lbs plus plus plus.

you're right. sharking is a much bigger business up north than down here. However there are far more sharks in the Gulf (at least so I've seen) than up in the northeast. The only threshers in the Gulf (as far as I know) are bigeyes which are protected, so no point in catching them. I'm not sure why shark fishing isn't as big - I'd love to get a mako. |
