3/28 CRAPPIE
This all started on Sunday when I received a text from a good friend of mine. All the text said was, "34 crappie in 2hrs". This immediately peaked my interest. So, a phone call was made and a date set for Wednesday evening.
After a few days of preparing, waiting, double checking, waiting, working, working, and preparing some more; we were finally at the chosen destination! Before I can even get situated Robert has already caught 2 monster crappie! Robert was using a Crappie Thunder Road Runner and I rigged up a jig/bobber combo. I wasted about 20 minutes catching only 1 small bluegill while Robert managed 10 nice Crappie. I know when to give in and now was the time! I switched to a red/white Crappie Thunder. It didn't take long before I was catching up to Robert. I found two different patterns, staging fish and spawning fish. The staging fish were on a drop off from 2' to 5' and the spawning fish were anywhere from 12" to 2' deep. All of these fish were on the rip rap of the dam. We ended the day with 50+ Crappie, 4-5 of them were 7"-8" and the rest anywhere from 12" to 16". I can't remember catching this many BIG crappie as most were from 14"-16". Oh yeah, this was all done on a private 50 acre lake that Robert owns. He has fished there 3 days this week catching over 100 BIG crappie. The other nice thing is, it is only 15 minutes from my house and I don't need the boat! We released all fish caught yesterday so they can spawn and make more big crappie in the future. We plan to take about 20 or so out next week for a fish fry and a picture! I think I only got one pic, but I will download and post it shortly. |

Ronnie, I'm waiting for it! It is too bad my next 5 weekends are booked! Three weekends at Texoma with clients and 2 weekends for me at the coast! It's a good thing Benbrook is on my way home from the office and can hit it a couple evenings a week. |

i will post (on 360tuna only) when I hear of it- my dad is on the lake weekly. I love it when it happens.. just drift down the dam holding your jig over the side and BAM! FISH ON!
Ross. it might be 5 weeks before it happens.. usually its the last place they will spawn.

its getting closer... was out there yesterday and picked up one on the dam... but she was HUGE!! belly full of eggs... I will kepp checking the dam.. its a blast when it happens... you can realy load the boat in a few hours. Heard there are still a ton of shallow crappie behind the Benbrook marina- and now with the extra 4 foot of water ABOVE full pool, theres a ton of cover in there.
