I had 80lb OTI line on my Stella along with 80lb blackwater leader around 5'. The saragosa I used for only 1 run had 65lb and 80lb leader. I wish I got more chance to use the saragosa but sadly the OTI rod broke at the first guide on the first hook up. It did'nt sound nice as drag pulled like Kil said but it was smooth.
The jackal jigs work well when ripped but when fast jigged did not get as many hook ups. TJ gave me a new assist hook to test out and it was on a blue jackal I used on my first drop. That jig was never seen again after a decent run. Pink jackal also had a good hook up and busted off as that was the jig I dropped on first drop of the OTI rod and saragosa outfit when the rod guide broke. The Hot's Wei World 48XXH rod is an awesome rod. For the weight it's very powerful but at the same time forgiving on the fisherman. I enjoyed fishing it alot and hope to jig YFT/BFT this year with it. The bend is wicked and can easily put pressure on fish. It also handled 450g very well. For my next trip I will try to test saragosa and OTI rod out more. The OTI rod has incredible power in the blank but is not as easy on the fisherman like that of the Hot's. I am positive this rod can whip 150lb fish easily. Overall I had a great time on the trip with Bret/Tony/CT/Chip and hope to do it again. I've got the itch and maybe I'll head to Venice next week to try to jig for YFT/BFT. |

Rich, here are the other two pictures I took of you on Saturday holding the nice AJ. This was the big fish of the trip!
![]() ![]() This is the weird jack that none of us could identify. ![]() This was a fantastic trip, and my first jigging trip. I've tossed diamond jigs for black sea bass and such, but have never hooked into such powerful fish as the amberjacks; one of them actually trashed one of my diamond jigs! They were beating the crap out of me and I had to sit out a couple of drifts. All in all, it was an amazing learning experience and I'd like to thank Chip, Rich, Bret and Tony for sharing their knowledge with me. I lost two jigs all day and didn't break off any of my home-made assist hooks I lost the first jig (a Williamson Benthos) on my first drop, which I got a hit about 40 cranks in and then I promptly lost due to a popped knot (broke right at the San Diego knot). 60lb line was a bit thin I then stepped up to 100lb mono and it was good I lost the second jig (250g Shulure Jigoon) after catching a couple of good fish on it, but then got snagged on the bottom. This pic is of the first AJ I caught, on the Shulure that lost a couple of drifts later. I was pleasantly surprised that my home-brewed assist hooks made with 200lb dacron planer-board line held up. I didn't break off any, nor did they look like they were falling apart. The cord itself got a bit frayed, and I think the thin ring didn't help any. My next batch will definitely feature bigger solid rings Also, I really didn't like the type of shrink wrap I got from Homies...it was very thin and didn't hold up to the chewing. I guess I gotta go looking for some 3M adhesive-lined stuff. |
