Strength or Capacity, what is your opinion?

Here is the situation that I want to see where people weigh in at: I'm waiting for delivery of a 10k XG and when it arrives will need to determine whether I'll be spooling it with PE6 or PE5. I'll be taking it to Mexico in the near future for yellowfin, but then plan on using it back home (Cape) for bluefin. I don't want to debate 18k vs 10k and get off topic (I have an 18k that will be my primary), but the way I figure it my decision comes down to strength (~225-250 yards of PE6) or Capacity (~300ish yards of PE5).

If you were in my shoes, would you go PE5 or PE6?

If the drag you are using will be fine with PE5 use that.

with the drag setting started at 22# and assuming 70yd cast, assuming you get hit that far away from boat..and a 70yd fish run.

what do you think the drag will be loosing half your spool?

Good point paul, I'll certainly have to back the drag if I get down to 1/2 spool or less as the drag will probably be close to double at that point.

An option is getting a Studio Oceanmark NO LIMITS SW16000 spool for your Stella 10kSW. It will take 300m of PE6 line.

jdm tackle has them in a couple of the colors. I have an XG with PE5 Varivas GT on it. At 70 lbs test I don't think you'd need to back down on the drag, actually. I might get the NO LIMITS for my PG on my jigging rod, but for casting, I think the Stella spools are optimized. Just my untested opinion...take it for what you paid for it!

That's a great saying dude, I love it! Yeah, I'm leaning towards the PE5…I just feel like having 50 or so more yards may make the difference someday.

Thanks for chiming in!

I would probably go with PE5 for your stated purpose. Something about 225 yards just doesn't sit right with me.

Like the earlier poster stated (lovin the avatar by the way), you are probably better off with your Stella spool if you need distance. I am using the No Limits to replace the spool on my SW8kpg.

Here's a quick comp between the SW10k and a SOM No Limits 08SW16000.

Don't let my wife know how much these things cost.
