Shimano Sustain

Does anyone have any opinions or reviews of the Shimano Sustain? I am looking at getting a good reel for throwing poppers and jigging, but not interested in paying $600 for a Stella...at least not right now. Thanks for any info.

You might look at the Shimano TwinPower 8000 - it's about the same price. It's supposed to surpass the Sustain in quality and performance. More line capacity and drag with a High and Power gear model. I tested the drag to 26 pounds and found it to be very smooth. Potential risk: it's a Japanese model.

On my last offshore trip I caught about a dozen BFT and it performed well.

Specifications:
Line Capacity (LB/YDS): 20/250, 25/180
Ball Bearing: 10 Anti-Rust Ball Bearings + 1 Roller bearing (A-RB)
Weight: 570g (20 oz)
Gear Ratio: 5.7:1
Max Drag: 15KG
Made in Japan

the sustain doesnt have a barring on both sides of the handle. kind of weak if you ask me. the twin power has barrings on both sides plus one extra on the drive train. the pg(power gear) has a deeper spool, but not by much. overall the twin power is the real to beat under the stella. no one in the us will fix it however. you can order parts directly from shimano. you wont get the spare spool but i thnik its a much better deal than the sustain.

just my 2cents

I got my Sustain SA8000FD two years ago and I also got a Stradic ST8000 as a backup for medium/heavy jigging. The problem is I've had so much good success and much fun with the Stradic I have yet to try my Sustain, it's still sitting in the box brand new and waiting for some serious action.

The Stradic has taken a 70lb+ YFT and held its own on mobey size Groupers and AJs. So for you cheapos like me who refuse to pay the ridiculous kiss my a$$ kind of monies Shimano wants for their Stellas, check out the Stradic for dependability and value.

Eventually when the need arises, what a formidable backup reel I'll have in the Sustain. Good fishing all. Keep up the challenge...spinning...a way of life...
