Rod Rich/Reel Poor

I find myself in the peculiar position of having three Cal Star Rods, two of which are roller rods: 760H and 7465H (a 6 1/2 foot 130 lb. rail rod with the big, big rollers. The third rod is a conventional 700H.

My only conventional reel at this time is the Accurate ATD 50 Wide with 130 pound Jerry Brown.

My current plans are not to buy another conventional reel but do everything the 50W won't do with a variety of good spinning rigs. I will definitely keep the two roller rods. I might keep the 700H in case I change my mind and buy a Hoo-X or an Avet or Shimano 30N. Or I might sell it and get some cash.

The question before the house is this: Can any of you think of a situation in which I would be likely to want to use the big 50 on a non-roller rod such as the 700H??? I cannot see ever casting with that reel, and I know the 700H isn't rated for line that heavy. Your opinions would be appreciated.

Every see a 12,000# Warn winch on a Honda Foreman 4-wheeler. Both are quality pieces of equipment but they just don't belong together, JMO.

That 50 is a great piece of equipment, but fishing it all day long will wear you out.
Look at an Avet 30 Pro or a 4 0/2 for that 760H.
Spinners have their uses (casting poppers), but I wouldn't consider them for the bulk of my fishing.

I have a tiagra 50W, and have hung it up because of the reason Jerry stated. IMO, it's just too much for anything in the GOM, with maybe exception of Lump tuna. Maybe I'm a wus, but I just don't enjoy fishing it at all. Too heavy, and too much wobble. And I think it holds somewhere along the line of 900 yds of 130# spectra, so unless you are fishing straight 80# mono, I just don't see the need for a reel that big. IMO, the ease of cranking on a reel that big is offset by amount of wobble I get. But they sure look good when you play with them while watching TV. :-) So mine is not for sale; its just sitting there in the corner looking good. Now I know why Penn sells their new commemoritive model in a pretty wooden box, with a shiny little coin.

Im in the same boat as russ. i just got a few new rods and i gotta find a reel for my lighter offshore setup with a seeker bsc 660h-6'c i was thinking maybe another lx or a trini maybe even a saltiga. i also need a reel for my seeker black steel g-665 61/2 foot for my light tackle applications i was thinking about an mxl or maybe a boss 270 but line capacity would be my only concern on a yft or when trolling

If you ever plan to target the mighty blue marlin, you'd think that 50W is to small.

You're right. But I'm a poor boy, and that's a little out of my league.

I'm just waiting for the day Russ posts that he sold the accurate and cal rods and bought a dozen newells and ugly stiks.

I'll tell ya'll one legitimate use I do have for the reel--I have a couple of acquaintances who do absolutely nothing but fly fishing from kayaks for red's in shallow water. They always fish Mule Slough at POC, and enter from the same oilfield cut. I have a flats cat (they don't even approve of any boat with a motor on it) and am going to get there one morning before dawn, mount the 50W to the 130 pound rod with the big foot rollers, and drop a pre-cast block of concrete weighing about a hundred pounds with the line tied to it. Then when I see them paddling up, I'm going to lock down the drag and put as much bend in the rod as I possibly can without having a heart attack, and start struggling and walking all around the boat making gutteral grunting sounds--Oh, and I'll wear a belt and harness for good measure.
