Jon,
Cubera popper looks good too. We are going to try those lures on the trip and find out they also work in Gulf of Mexico. ![]() Could you describe how to work those lures ? I am sitting in a motel room in Morehead City, NC now as we couldn't get out due to windy condition. They say wind starts to die down in the afternoon. I just talked with a commercial giant fisherman and he said he usually land a giant in 400-500 lbs range in 20 minutes. ![]() |

you don't want to catch that giant bluefin on boat gear. i hope that you brought a decent 50 or penn 70 and your harness. it isn't much sport catching those fish in shallow water from a chair and using those 130 and 80lb class outfits. good luck and i hope that you release a over 500lbs....rick

Kil ,
Cubera is a GT popper , it is not ideal for situation where the boat must keep on moving to keep up with the YFT school , the angler won't be able to retrieve the lure fast enough due to the chugging action of Cubera . With pencil type such as Tuna n Skipjack , the angler just lift the rod tip high to retrieve the lure fast to have another cast into the constantly moving YFT school . I wonder if Bluefin tuna can be targetted using popping method and if so , I wonder what size lures and rod/reel outfits needed to subdue such brute ? I imagine GT rod such as WV80XH would be suitable and Stella 20000FA filled with 500m of PE6 line can handle the job , now it's up to the angler to finish the job . Let me have your thought about this , may be I get my partner to make you a few big lures to try it and meanwhile , good luck with the trip but safety first ! Sportfisherman . Ksong,
I'm still wondering why that guy has that popper back wards. Maybe he unhooks the swivel and turns it upside down while running the boat. A couple of years ago, I was jerking a 16" Marlin Magic lure to clear off the seaweed. The big J hook wrapped around the leader in the process so I started cranking it in to fix. A huge hoo hit the tangled up mess and was boated. Maybe going outside the box with lures is worth a try. Also, I never have tried Sake. Hope the weather gets better for you in NC. Sportfisherman, Those are some fine looking poppers. Where would a guy go to purchase them? I really like that pencil popper. How's the fishing in Indonesia? What species do you catch? I've never been there. |

Last year during a trip out of Venice, LA with Capt. Mike Ellis, we did see some yellowfin chasing flying fish at night near the rigs. We tried using chuggers on them but didn't work, fish was only here and there, not many. As such, I think only a suitable lure mimicking those flying fish would have done the job.
A pencil popper will definitely be deadly that day as their skipping and trashing on the surface is just like a nervous escaping flying fish. Here is a video I extracted from Carpenter's DVD on how to work a pencil popper, demonstrated by the highly respected Mr Konishi: Working a Pencil Popper by Mr Konishi |

We didn't get out today because of windy condition. But as wind dies down this evening we plan to leave around 10:00 pm and head down to Southport, NC, located around 90 miles south of Morehead City as reports there are very promising. No poppers this time. Commercial guys usually use a rod holder to fight a giant instead of a fighting chair to shorten fighting time. my friends, Capt Mark and Eddie fighting a giant ![]() Last edited by ksong : 01-06-2007 at 06:38 PM. |

Hi Gunsmoke , Indonesia is flanked by West Pacific ocean in the north east and Indian Ocean in the west n south so we get the tropical species of both oceans such as Black Marlin , Blue Marlin , Stripe Marlin , Sailfish , Mah-mahi , YFT , Bigeye tuna , Skipjack and Longtail tuna , Rainbow runner as well as a few species of bonitos . Inshore we get GT , Queensfish , Red Bass , Narrow barred mackerel , Red Bass , Barracuda and many others , I am talking about gamefish here . Indonesia is spanned some 3000 miles from the western to the eastern borders and 1000 miles from the north to the south with 5 main islands and a few smaller islands with numerous small tiny island , some 17000 all together . Our famous tourist destination is Bali which many in USA think it is in the South Pacific . Sportfishing is still at it's infancy and good boats are only in Jakarta area where fishing is terrible but a few of us do keep abreast of what is happening elsewhere , sportfishing technique wise and popping has virtually been my passion , no more trolling nowaday .
