Jason,
I cannot offer any direct advice, because I like you am a newcomer just rigging up for an all too distant trip on the Big E. However, I can tell you that the advice you receive on this board, while not always in agreement, is absolutely sound and will give you a good basis for decision. Folks like Ksong, Minnow, Txseadog, McGolfer, and others is like gold. Also from time to time Minnow (TJ) has advertised used gear. I bought a used Accurate from him and it was exactly the top quality he represented it to be. Also, I purchased a Japanese popping rod (the Smith 80P/35) from Randy (Anglers Proshop) and while I could not make any claims for it as a tuna rod, it is an incredible casting rod for the purposes I purchased it for--casting 4 ounce spoons off the jetties and horsing in big reds and jacks. It is an incredible casting rod for me. The important point I want to make is that in my humble opinion, none of these folks will steer you wrong, and I have developed a high level of confidence that the ones who sell tackle will advise you based on what is best--not what will make them the most profit. Russ

Hey russ you don't work for the VA do you? Just curious,b/c you know I have an uncle who has a friend who bought close to the same gear as you listed.
-edit- haha just re-read your post in occupation,at first glance thought you meant a state when you said VA. I believe we are going on the same trip, memorial day.You would most likely be friends with my uncle, Louis. Not sure if you were one of the ones who went, but I went on the last 12 hour on the big e. Hey Jason_L- The great thing about a custom rod vs "off the rack" rods, are that the rod builder will 'fit' the rod to your specifications.
The rod builder will make the rear/fore grips' length and thickness as well as placement on the blank to correctly match your height and fishing preferences. In addition to usually much higher quality components (guides, reel seat, etc), the custom rod enables you to fight a fish with much better leverage, less energy, and better technique which all together makes you for efficient during a fight with a bigger fish. The reel is very important, but you really fight a fish with the rod. Good luck and you're very smart to start so far in advance in acquiring your equipment. |

Good Post Ragman
Good post Ragman. I agree with what you said in that a custom or spec built rod can help land, not catch, fish. Not meaning to advertise here, but my clients determine foregrip and reargrip lenght, placement of aluminum reel seat, get top quality stainless guides and other components. And guides are placed on the spine to prevent twist and breakage. Custom rods are more expensive no doubt.
You can pay $100 at Academy or $350-500 for one built for you, depending on how exotic you want to get. Crank your drag down on one of less expensive rods, its painful to watch. You WILL feel the difference and in the long run probably replace rods multiple times while your custom keeps on fishing. I've seen some posts by some really good rod builders on here and everyone is close to saying the same thing. Ya get what ya pay for.

Thanks for the replies Ragman and Savage, i think a custom rod would be best. Thing is I haven't really found a website telling me exactly what they offer. I guess most who go to them know already, but I have no clue lol.Anyone rod builders out there with a more in depth website or do I need to go to them with my exact wants already?

Jason,
We're both in Austin. If you're looking for chunking tackle for blue water, send me a personal mail or email (they do that on this board, don't they?) and we'll set up a time for you to check out some "50" class reels and several related rods (from super short to really long, depending on whether you're doing standup w/gimbal and plate or using the rail) built on Calstar and Seeker blanks. I don't do the spinner thing offshore; but, I do like to cast Yummees and YoZuri's on conventional gear. I even jig sometimes; but, it's not my favorite way to fish. Jep |
