Jigs&Assist hooks

KSong, since you are our resident Guru of Jigging, I request your advice. I also request advice from McGolfer, Minnow, & all I Have left out, who have experience in this area. I'm preparing for late Nov. Big E trip. What brand jigs & assist hooks do you use?what size/length assist hooks for each size jig. I just bought 30 knife jigs,on eBay, w/ assist hooks tied w/300# Spectra& shrink tubing.3/0,5/0, &9/0 size.Did I screw up,& waste my money? Is Kevlar better to tie hooks to solid ring?(10 each 100,150,200g jigs)
Also,I read where you put carbontex washers in your Saltists. I have 2 SST50's, one 4.9, one 6.4. do you feel you got enough improvement in drag performance to justify the time & $22 each? Thanks & good luck this weekend.

Have you come across a site that sells the material in sheets?

Randy of the Anglers-proshop can answer better than me about assist hooks.
I have no preference to assist hooks since I believe all hooks ( assist hook, single hook and treble hook) works and I can not say any style hook is better than others. I saw many times that asssist hook's line broke while fighting big fish. You'd better make your own assist hooks than buy ready-made ones. I believe Randy sells heavy Kelvar(500 lbs) for assist hooks.
I suggest to experiment yourself about the length of assist hooks and size of hooks and material used. I now experiment to use heavy mono lines with plastic tube over the lines for making assist hooks.

As I posted on the other site, Saltiga's drag washers and Saltist drag washers are different materials while Trinidad's and Torium's are same.
If you want to use Saltiga's drag washers on Saltist, it cost over $100.
Many believes Carnontex drag washers are better than Saltiga's or Trinidad's.
I definitely recommend to use Carnontex drag washers on Saltist.

what size/length assist hooks for each size jig.I used Mustad live bait hooks from size 6/0 to 10/0, for short assist hook 1-1/2 inches, medium 1-7/8 and long 2-1/2 inches
I just bought 30 knife jigs,on eBay, w/ assist hooks tied w/300# Spectra& shrink tubing.3/0,5/0, &9/0 size.Did I screw up,& waste my money? No, I don't think so. most of the jigs will work
Is Kevlar better to tie hooks to solid ring?(10 each 100,150,200g jigs)Yes, tie it to the solid ring.

THANKS to both of you. I'm up extra early, might as well shop, hehehe! Now I'm learyof using the Spectra-tied hooks I just bought.Wake Randy up! Here comes an order.

One of my questions was: does anyone know of a site that sells the carbontex material in sheets? I could cut out my own washers, copying the replaced washers. I have a lot of reels Smooth drags doesn't list as having washers for.

Jeff,
I've used 300# spectra for assist hooks for some time with zero failures.
If you measure your drag washers for OD & ID you'll often be able to find a match or one that can be trimmed to fit.

call up there to smooth drag and talk to Dawn. You will probably need to send her your drags, and she will match them up. Or as what Snagged suggested, OD-ID, and thickness:then send email her the measurements.
