Jigging Rod?

I am new to jigging; I bought/lost my first jig last weekend. It was a blast. I caught my first tuna on that jig as well

In any case, I talked with couple of people on 2cool "Snagged" who told me about this board. I just ordered 16 Williamson jigs "Benthos" from Cabalas, and about 60 dollars worth of assist hooks from 360tackle.com (I am also in the process of ordering some of their jigs as well). The rod I used was 30lb stiff rod with an 850SS Penn on it. I want to buy a couple of rods that are mad for jigging. What rods in the $100-$200 range would you recommend? I have four Penn 850SS "two spooled with braid", will this work or do I need to buy some other type of reel.

Welcome aboard Joe,

For that price range there are many good rod to be have.
OTI rods will be availabla at the end of MAY. retail price is around $200, come with FUJI SIC guides, Fuji reel seat, aluminum gimbal and rod sock.

If you in hurry to get the rod, try Shimano travala XX heavy rod, FTU rod and Sea Magic rod all of those will fit the bill. JMO

I like the OTI rod I have and the sea magic rod from islanders. I don't care for the trevalla rod i have. Not enough backbone. I guess the travalla would be good for light jigging, just be sure you tell the big fish not to bite.

What kind of reels are you guys using conventional or spinning.

I use conventional. I am waiting on an accurate 665 2spd right now to use on my next rod.

Welcome aboard Joe.
A good spinner can be made using a CalStar 700 series blank. I'd suggest that you PM Txseadog about this.
Islander does have a spinner also.

Well guys I called Islander today and ordered two "Sea Magic Dragonfly Jigging Rod Series 400 gram 5'8" Rod 80-200# Spinning" I was not sure if I needed the 600 gram or not.

I am going to put two of my Penn 8500 reels on them for now. I would like to find a lighter reel with the same line capacity. I plan on getting a few of the OTI rods in May. I was PM with Ragman on the other site a couple days back and he told me the rods will not be ready for a bit. Here is the pic of my tuna.

looks like we have another tuna addict in the making. tuna can make fishing for any thing else seem boring. welcome to the addiction and be prepared to spend lots of cash on this habit...lol.....rick

you did good on the 400 gram vs. 600 gram purchase. theres a huge wieght difference between the 2. I first recieved the 600 gram, and found it was more suited for a standup style 30 size reel... IMO- too big to jig with all day. I sent it back, and Chris sent me a 400 gram... perfect for the Avet Lx I have. if you compare the 2 side by side, it seems there is a big missing link... wheres the 500 gram jiggin stick?? LOL!! I posted a review of the 400 gram SeaMagic in the rod section of this forum with a true 20# scale weight attached to one end. It definately has some balls.... BUT- I still would rather have an OTI 400 gram jiggin stick (and will as soon as they get here).

I do a lot of jigging but don't own a "jigging" rod. I was in Roy's yesterday and couldn't help but notice the new Quantum Boca Jigging Specials. Great looking rods from $99 - 149. I wish I could remember the exact specs on them but I recall there were two spinning rods and two conventional rods. They were thin, stout, short and light as a feather. The conventionals were 5'8" for up to 100# braid and 270 gram, and 6' for up to 200# braid and 500 gram. These rods are so thin the guides appear to be too big for the rods.

I don't know grams from goalposts....

Does anyone know why they are so short? And what material they are made of to be so thin and have so much backbone and strength?

And lastly....will I really catch more fish with one of these jigging rods than I catch now with my Tallus? ...
