I hate to say it but I had some problems with my 870 2 speed. I experienced much of the same things that Uncle Russ did, right out of the box it seemed to make rough noises and felt tight but when I called Accurate they told me to go ahead and use it to see if maybe it would break in and start to smooth out. Well I did fish it and after about three or four Jacks (that I pacticaly wenched in with 30 lbs of drag) the reel started to act up even more and the handle started to wobble and felt like it was going to fall off so I stopped using it and sent it back to Accurate. They took it apart and replaced the complete right side (gears, handle, and all) and got it back to me quickly.
I have used the reel at least 5 trips now and have not had a problem, it is as smooth as ever and I have no problem reaching 30 lbs of drag without any resistance in the handle or the lever. I must admit that I was a little worried about this reel at first but I am convinced that it is the best jigging reel ever!!! |

I dont know what kind of fishing you do but fighting any fish with a lower gear ratio is alot easier on the Angler. I have caught many large fish on hi single speed reels but if you have and option of a lower gear why wouldn't you want it? |

I mostly jig and cast with spinners and occassionally jig with conventional. When fighting large fish I use the pump and wind method, utilizing the power of the rod; more line is gained per "pump". Low gear ratio is indeed easier on the angler but 2:1 is way too low.
I still don't see the need for a 2:1 ratio gear unless on the chair or on the rail winching in the fish. |

Hey Minnow, 200lb fish is indeed a big fish and can be "done" with single speed reels imo, I am mostly a spinner guy, although I haven't caught anything that big yet but I firmly believe catching them with a single speed reel like a 4.1 ratio spinner is not a problem. Rhale, I have caught many AJs that size and have also done them on a Accurate 870N Boss Magnum, with a spinner you won't even sweat a bit, bringing in fish can be very fast with a single speed reel. By and large I will use an overhead reel only when I need the capacity, ie. deep dropping in over 600ft depth, otherwise I use a spinner whenever possible. As far as jigging is concern I still don't find the need for a 2-speed reel but that is just my way, everybody has their own way of having fun catching fish, I didnt mean it is wrong using a 2 speed reel. Hopefully I will catch a 200lb tuna with single speed spinning gear, that is my dream/target for this season! ![]() |
