Frozen Screws

I just got in 2 sets 0f carbontex drag washers for my Saltist 50s, only to find out that I can't loosen the screws. the reels are about 1 year old & have'nt been apart yet. Corrosion or Loktite causing the problem?. Any suggestions?The screw heads have slots w/ a hole in the center. Is there such a thing as an impact screwdriver?

Yes there is such a thing but I doubt it would work as they are made for larger screws. These also require you to hit it with a hammer which causes it to spin; just doesn't seem like it would work to well for that. More than likely if its that stuck in there you are going to end up stripping the head of it out. Depending on how easy it is to get to I'd say just drill the top of the screw off and then come back with a pair of vise and try again (ofcourse after removing side plate.) I honestly don't see why anyone would put loctite on it but corrosion would be highly likely. Alot of the time when I'm working on my reels I have a very small set of screw drivers I use, but in turn this makes you loose a lot of your power. In most cases (if you are using tiny screw drivers) you should be able to pop it loose with a bigger driver.

I just reread it and saw that you said "screws" vs only having trouble with one of them so drilling them may become a pain. Another thing you may be able to do is is put your your screw driver on the edge and tap the screw driver with a hammer it try to twist it out that way. Then again that would only work if it was a phillips/flat head screw, and I don't know what that particular reel has as far as types of screws (allen, torque head, etc..)

try soaking the screws in corrosion X, let sit for a day. it often loosens the corrosion enough. I coat all my screws in CX every time I disassemble my reels, and never have any problems now.

One of the first things I do with a new reel is to take it apart and coat everything where Corrison X and Penn Muscle grease. Corrison X for the bearings & parts with tight tolerances and Muscle grease on everything else (gears, clickers, inside the frame, screw threads, between the reel seat and the frame, etc.)

Kroil oil is a penetrating oil that should work to free them up. Look into, its the best on the market. I use it for head bolts, exhaust manifold bolts or whatever gets stuck. This stuff can get any rusted nut off if given a chance to soak in. It doesnt take very much either. The corrosion X might work but if it doesnt, try the kroil oil. Look it up, I bet you find good things on it.

Like Pie Puncher says Kroil or Mouse Milk from the hardware store will loosen stuck screws

Also... White lithium grease in the screw holes will keep them from sticking ever again.

One additional point... You can use a soldering iron to add heat to the screw along with your penetrating oil. It will make the penetrating oil more effective. Just touch to head of the screw with the iron for about a minute or so. Add more oil as it cools and try again with the screw driver. You are trying to break a galvanic bond.

I agree with txseadog. Break down any new to you reel and add the grease.
