Do you put a backing on your spectra?

Just curious as I never put a backing of any type and have always just tied straight to the spool. Most inshore/surffishing guys always cover the spool in mono or a waxed rigging floss of some sort. I've never had a single problem with line slipping on the spool or anything else.

My guess is alot of it has to do with the type of tackle involved versus using cast reels versus using Penn Senators. Maybe it has something to do with the fear of spreading spools.

So, what do you yall do?

I use pet wrap to wrap the spool and tie direct to it, so far no slipping yet.

most the reels I buy used already have the vet wrap on the spool arbor... I find the spectra grips it, with no concern about slipping. I have only had one reel (bass reel) slip.. I couldnt figure out what was wrong with it and gave it away... my friend later told me- and said it casts better than any other reel he had... DOH!!! I tie all my spectra straight to the spool arbor in case I get down to that knot.. I dont want a 5' piece of mono losing me a fish that may be the biggest I ever possibly catch...

I used to put one wrap of vet tape on my reels before I loaded the spectra, but the last 4 reels -2 inshore/2 offshore; 1 conventional/3 spinners- I just left it off because I had run out.

I made sure to tie a tight knot and then finished it with a couple of half-hitches.

I wound the line with a lot of drag and haven't had any problems.

The old black friction tape works well also, like ragman said, spool spectra on with plenty of drag so the spectra wont dig down into it's self when you are fishing with the drag set at it's normal settings. Bruce

Whats the best way of putting new spectra on a spinning reel without putting too much twist in the new line. I have tried to get academy and gander mountain to use their wind on machines ,but the spool on my stella is too large for their equiptment

Shimano tells you to run line through the eyes of the rod and wind line, with the spectra coming from the bottom of the spool, with the spool of spectra in line with the rod. I have done this and haven't had any problems yet. I hope my description makes sense. In the owners manual there is a picture. Bruce

I don't put anythng on it. I tie a 1/2" loop knot w/ a half-hitch,
then a cinch loop in the opposide direction of spool travel. get about
6-10 wraps on it and no more slip. Let's face it- if you get down to
10 wraps on the spool, you're prob. gonna farm it, anyway.
I am pretty anal about how I put mono on my spinners. With braid,I actually
just wind the line on thru the rod straight off the spool w/ tension. it's been my experince that braid does not twist or memorize like mono,because it's made of many individual fibers, instead of 1 continuous solid filament, like
Mono or F/C

I just use a few wraps of black tape on the spool.

A question I have is whether any of you wet pack the line onto your reels in order to get the line to pack tighter.
