Actually, that reel has been high on my list since I started rounding up tackle. I was going to buy one until TJ posted the 50W and I couldn't pass it up. Still, I have not completely given up on the idea of a separate chunking rig, especially since I have two Calstar roller rods and don't want to let one get lonely in the closet.
So, under current consideration (in addition to just using the 50W for both functions) are: (1) Avet Pro 30--but I want the narrow, not the wide, and I am uncertain whether they are making a narrow model yet, (2) Tiagra 16--(TJ has pointed me in that possible direction,) (3) the Penn 16VSX, or (4) the Hoo-X (which, as has been pointed out to me, may have initial bugs to work out.)When I was looking at the Pro30 early on, it was pointed out to me that it will hold 500 plus yards of 130 pound (that may well have been the W model, though) so you would not need to shell out the cash for the 80 hollow. What I would really love for a chunking reel is the ATD 12, but... Russ

Russ,
Whatever you buy, just make sure you get a 2-speed for chunking. If you are only going to use the reel for chunking YF's at floaters, you don't need a wide version. Those school-ie size tuna (50-90lbs) don't pull off more than 200 yards if you give them 25 lbs of drag from the start. The only reason you might want to consider a wide version is if you plan to also troll with the reel in deep water. I've seen big Hoo's strip off 400 yards at a 25 lb setting. If this is your case, then just buy a Tiagra 30WLRSA. I've caught blue marlin on them many times. If you only plan on using the reel on head boats, then just stick with a narrow or regular width spool. I have yet to buy an Avet, but I understand they are good reels for the money. |

Hope you order it in the color Blue. That way it will match the color of your face when I flop my first tuna on the deck under 3 minutes. ![]() |
