hey guys, ive found that the drag curve is very on off between strike and full, even if i take it a touch past strike it goes to far too much drag, is this because the drag hasnt beded in or is there another problem here?

thanks

some reels the drag curve is pretty steep from strike to full. on my sx i set strike at 6lbs and found as soon as i nudged it just slightly passed strike it already jumped to 7.5lbs - there was no in between.

Most Avets jump between settings as soon as you nudge past one. I have only had one reel that got increasing drag with increased lever movement between Bait and Strike. It still went to full drag as soon as it was nudged past Strike though. Perfectly normal.

Drag curve ramp has to do with the arrangement of the belleville washers, very easy to fix at home. They should orient ((())) like this.

thanks stryper, another thing ive noticed is that i begin to loose freespool at a very eary stage, with the drag set at say 13 lb at strike the handle gets a bit heavy to wind? could this be because of the washer orientation?

My JX can go to about 22# max drag. I lose free spool around 17#. Normal for most AVET's I've played with. I use it as a spare/chicken rig rod now.

I've had/have many Avets, and all statements about wearing in the drag
are true, as are greasing the drag, and lubing all the bearings. Alan Tani's
threads will really help you dial it in. regarding ramp rate; you might try
lightening up on the spool brake knob to level it out a bit. test w/ your drag scale until you get a more useable combination of freespool/ drag settings.
The increased cranking effort at mid & higher settings is typical of Avet,
and is normal for these reels. I've been told the new Raptor series has somewhat solved this problem, but I haven't handled one so I can't say for sure.
You've still got a nice, capable reel.

thanks for all the info guys, just wondering, when I change the washers to "((()))" dies this smooth out the drag curve i.e- will the increase in drag be more gradual?
