Boss 665W 2 speed

I have been waiting a bit to hear some more reports on this reel (after some of the initial first run negative comments). But amazingly I have not seen anything else on this reel here or on any other boards.

Anybody have any comments now that they have been out a few months? Did the guys with initial problems get them worked out to their satisfaction?

It is funny as I posted about 665 vs 665W on the other site this morning.

My original concerns for small lever drag reels was the stiffness of moveing drag lever, losing freespool and thightness of turning handle when using heavy drag over 20 - 25 lbs at strike. I can move the lever drag pretty smoothly upto 25 lbs at strike which is more than I can ask for. If I want, I can get over 30 lbs drag at strike.

The amazing thing is free spool and smoothness of turning handle are barely affected no matter how much I increase the drag.

The round knob looks good, but I found it is not convenient when I fought a decent fish on the Gulf Coast trip. I replaced the round knob with T-bar handle as shown in the picture.

Freespool is excellent, better than most small jigging reels including star drag reels. Avet reels are known for excellent free spools, but I am surprised to see 665 has better free spool than Hoo-X.

Some guys say why we need two speed reels for jigging tuna. Yes, I have caught all my tuna on jigs upto 250 lbs using single speed reel and I had no problem with it. But once you taste the joy of using low speed whiling fighting a big fish over 100 lbs, you wouldn't go back to single speed reel.

I was asked whether to buy 665 or 665 Wide and my answer is 665.
You can get about 400 yard of 80 lbs braided line and some room for short topshot on 665 and that is more than enough for jigging tuna under 200 lbs. Besides, the narrower spool is much convenient for jigging.

jig:I am one of those who had problems. My friend Drifter did as well. I initially bought a 3-speed and used it only in drag tests. I had no trouble getting the reel up to about 30 pounds at strike.

When I sold that reel and bought a 2-speed wide, something inside broke--I have no idea what it was--Accurate replaced the reel cheerfully and promised to let me know what went wrong, but never did. Here is what I believe: I ordered from Melton before they were available, and got one of the first ones. The manual said (to paraphrase slightly): "Due to the fact that you have unlimited drag available, feel free to set the drag at your desired setting." Now I knew that drag was not really infinite, but I figured I could not hurt the reel. So I set it up to about 35-38 pounds at strike and 45 at full. I got into a harness and pulled on it repeatedly. Two things happened: (1) the clicker failed and would not work again, and (2) when you reeled forward, it made rattling, rough noises (way way beyond what is due to stainless gears.) Accurate's theory was that a washer popped off on the clicker side. I will never know. In any case, what was miraculous was that, if you could stand the roughness, the reel was still fishable--it still put out 30 pounds plus of drag, which was more than enough.

The second reel was better. I had the advantage of being told by Accurate that they didn't really mean that you could crank it up as high as you wanted, and, by that time, the Melton catalog had an entry that recommended 25 pounds of drag at strike. So I used that setting. Nothing broke this time, but guess what, at that drag setting, the clicker stopped working. That was enough for me and I sent it back to Melton for a credit.

Drifter's experience was different. His first reel he only dialed the drag up to the 'twenties. His problem was that the ramp-up between the point just off of freespool and strike was too sudden. In other words, if he set the pre-set for 20 pounds of strike, when he flipped it off freespool--but no further--it would already be at 12-13 pounds. Accurate acknowledge this was not a good idea. They replaced the drag cam with one that more nearly resembled the single-speed 665. He also had the impression they were going to change that out on all new reels.

They sent him a new reel and, while he is still not completely happy with the way the cam ramps up, now the clicker sometimes makes funny sounds and then is OK when he lowers the drag.

So that was our experience with 4 reels. I have no doubt I broke the first one and it would never have happened at the more reasonable drag-settings Kil is using. I am fairly certain I will buy another one later on, especially given Kil's positive experience under actual fishing conditions--or I may say to heck with it and buy an ATD 12 and never worry. (No, I won't jig with a reel that heavy--It is too much reel and I am not enough man.

I had a problem with my 870 2-speed when I got it but Accurate fixed the problem and sent it back to me fast. I have been tearing fish up with it ever since.... I set the drag to 27/28 lbs @ strike and the reel functions flawlessly putting the hurt on some big AJ's... Hopefully I will test it out on Yellowfin this weekend..
