Bimini Twist in JB Hollow?

Folks,

I know that one of the great advantages of using Jerry Brown hollow weave line is the ability to pull a braided loop in it. So my question may be theoretical, but I am curious whether, if one chose to do so, say in the interest of speed in re-rigging, the hollow weave line can be tied in a Bimini as effectively as the solid line? Any ideas or experience in this area?

Russ

Yes you can tie any kind of knot in the JB hollow core. Some practice will make you faster at pulling an end loop, but there are times that a bimini is easier.

Thanks, Gull. I am just such a klutz I like to practice something a lot before I try it on the business end of a big fish. The Bimini I know. As for the loop, I don't even have a latch needle and the diagrams I have seen--even the good ones--don't make a lot of sense, so I won't be able to use that on my July trip--too much to do at work and at home to learn the process.

Russ,

I use single strand fishing wire for pulling end loops. About 40 lb wire. I take six feet and bend it in half. I take some smooth jawed pliers and squeeze the end down towards a point. I want it to be slightly rounded not sharp.

You can find instructions on Basil Pappas' web site.

Pull a loop at home before the trip and then use the bimini if you need to re-rig in a hot bite. You can redo the loop when motoring to a new location.

Russ,

Jerry Brown doesn't recommend the BIMINI on his line. Jerry personal suggests using a 7 rap surgeon's lop witch is very fast and easy . It ties the same as a standard surgeons lop but instead of 2 rap use 7.

Sea Gull: Thank. I have seen that and figured someday I will try it. Might as well gut it up and do it now.

6X6: Very interesting. I had not heard that. Interestingly enough I have been tying some 2 and 3-wrap surgeons loops in Spectra braid and pulling on it with some pretty heavy drag in various lines, and had no problem. I was meaning to report this but was waiting until I had time to do some more scientific tests with the scale. Now I will try the 7-turn also at some point.

I tried 6 -7 rap surgeon's loop a few times at Basil's suggestion, but it seems too bulky.

Kil: I can imagine it was bulky. Did you do a test on breaking strength? For my own purposes, I can see using it with a very short leader with the knot outside the reel--say for popping.

Guys, the idea behind hollow line is that you can splice these connections and not have knots that could potentially fail. Like DSG says, get a piece of wire and give it a try. If you INSIST on the knot, make sure you seal it with a drop of superglue to prevent it from slipping. Here's a link to a very good thread on spliced end loops. It's about 3 pages long; read to the end and follow the diagrams and you will get it.

Basil: Understood completely, my friend, and I have read that excellent article. I just always believe in having a backup procedure I can handle if everything fouls up or I don't have the wire handy, etc.
