Berk Hi-Test 50#

Does anyone know the breaking strength of the 50# hi test berkley??? I think I may run 25 yds on my spinning reel for a shock leader.

Hi Test 50# has actual breaking strength of 84#'s.

I put 60# Hi Test on 30wlrsa's. It tests out at 104#'s.

I put 80# Hi Test on 50wlrsa's. It test's out at 127#'s.

thanks ... i figured someone had the actual specs on the line. looks like 50 for the shock leader on the spinner, and 80 for the 4 foot leader on the jigs..

I've always used Big Game, so was wondering how the line diameter might compare to the Hi-Test. Anybody have the same line weights in both types to give a comparison?

i was told by my local shop that the berkeley high test was supposed to break at 80% over the stated line rating.

Big Game is a great line. Hi test and Momoi Diamond are neck and neck in breaking strength. Both are great products that you can trust. Stick with Momoi, Big Game, Jinkai or Sufix. No need for braid if using high capacity reels unless your trying to pull rig donkey's off rigs.

Hey Ronnie, Why do you want to run 25 yds of 50# mono in front of your spectra on your spinner? For a conventional reel I can understand because it is much easier to get the backlash out of mono but you will loose easily 30'-40' of casting distance due to the diameter of the mono. 5' is plenty on your spinner. On my jigging setup I go with 15'-20' of mono so I have plenty of mono to rerig when the line gets rough.

i was gonna use it for a topshot... and to absorb shock ?? am I wrong. I thought about just 5 feet for my fingers sake... but will 5 feet absorb the shock ? I would think I would need at least enought to go from the waters edge up to the rod standing on the Big E.. my lack of experience dictates my guesswork...lol.

Most of the guys fishing the Big E, myself included, keep the mono short because if you have 25 yards of 50lb/diameter mono line chasing the lure/popper you will notice a difference in your casting distance. Most go to a medical supply and pick up a roll of Koban. Koban is a medical wrap that sticks to itself and wrap a few times around your pointer and middle finger (wrap separately not together) to hold the spectra with your wrapped fingers. On the TBB 06 I retired one of my spinners because it was loaded with 80lb spectra, 3' 80lb flourocarbon and would not get a Tuna Hunter outside the lights! That is the reason I got to tryout the Cabo 80, Stella 8000, Torium 20, and I don't remember what else I casted. I went back with 50lb spectra and now the Tuna Hunters SOAR at least 200' from the same rig.

Load the reel with spectra and pick up some Koban. If you can't find any someone on the boat will probably have some you can use. If you don't like it cut off some spectra and put mono under your finger right there on the boat.

If you start with 25 yds of mono you also won't have but 3/4 of a spool by the time you get your bait in the water and that is bad because it reduces your retrieve speed and increases the drag pressure on the fish. Remember 15lbs of drag with a full spool, 30lbs at 1/2 capacity, and 45lbs at 1/4 capacity.
