aruvio: I am as negative about the PETA folks as you are--primarily because of their extremism. And I agree with you in the sense that all the balloons from all the sport fishermen on the planet probably don't add up to one one-billionth of what washes out of the average city every day.
That having been said, I personally have no problem with trying to do every little bit to not add to the problem and I know there are a lot of people who are more militant than I am and respect those opinions--although not PETA . Interesting on the latex balloons. I had bought a whole bag of cheap party balloons and I saw some latex ones at a party shop for nearly a buck each. Yikes. Russ

There are numerous methods of using a balloon and yes we use Latex which can be bought in bulk at very reasonable prices. For baits and lung type air I use a 17 inch balloon inflated to the max as in any type of wind and chop it gives a great action to the bait. Not only does it aid in getting the bait into the zone but it is amazing how long a sardine will live with a hook in its mouth when attached to a balloon. 30 minutes is not unusual. Learning to get one out in the middle of a group of fishermen requires asking some questions and watching someone knowledgeable before performing. Otherwise YOU could become that guy that everyone is not talking nicely about.
We use up to 36 inch balloons when fishing helium and fill them according to the amount of wind, weight of bait (Including plastics) and the length of the line under the balloon. The idea is to keep the bait skipping on the top of the water creating a splash and movement. Getting the right combination of the above as well as how far out the fisherman allows the balloon to go from the reel takes a few tries before a helium filled device will work properly. But when it does it can be fantastic. As a note, if you are fishing from a commercial vessel I would highly doubt you could bring your own helium. If you are on a private boat just be careful.
