fly the rag for marlin?
My mate and I were sitting off of harbour Island fishing for yft when about 5 pm all hell broke loose a couple of hundred yards fom the boat but despite our efforts to raise the big ones our dinky sandy keys pilchard did little more than bring in the boners. wE poped up the kite and sent out a med sized boner on an 80w with a 15/0 circle and voila a big black shadow crashed the baits. It seemed that every time we pulled up to a pinnacle ad chummed up the yft's the same thing happened a big one would crash the party and spook the tunas I guess from now on I'll be flyin the rag with a big bait while tuna fishing because our hook up ratio has been great compared to 20 % on the troll. I am even thinking about dragging a mack or skipjack on a kite way long while I am draggin naturals to see if the shy ones go for it. Has any one else tried this? My guys really love it plus it really pisses the man in the blue suit when you take his food away and then drop it down again. I did tell the old timers at the dock about this an it got them mad also I guess they rather bs the fare while sitting on the helm chair dragging rubber all day long...

Kites are great for presenting any type of bait. You can use a heavier leader and larger hook without spooking fish. Keep your leaders/wind-ons/topshots short. Use spectra for the kite line and on the fishing rods. Consider carrying a helium tank aboard the boat.
Be prepared to work the reels. Take up slack and let line out is almost constant. |

We have caught tuna and sails under the kite, but I have yet to get a marlin to the boat..(with my limited experience with the kite) and DSG is right.. like anything good that works.. it takes constant attention.
