Bazztex--
I have one sitting on my desk. It is UGLY... My customer just cut some blanks using your pattern. I could not talk him into doing the shaping for me. SO, I was off on Tuesday( I have very little wood working skills ) But with a router and a dremel tool, this almost looks like a fishing lure. I got stainess wire from a welding shop for the harness. Gander Mountain had some SPRO 250 lb split rings. This one is ready for a little more shaping / sanding , then it goes to the Daughter's place for paint. Before I glued it together, I put some rubber bands around it and threw it in the sink for a tank test. It listed to port pretty severely. I added more wieght to the right side, it almost sits level now. I think this will be a one of a kind. Would you like me to send your patterns back ? Or just bring them to Freeport ? I will be ordering some Tuna hunters from Galveston soon. Any plans for a DFW Bass Pro meeting before October ? Thanks a ton for all the advice , MO |

I've been working with 2" X 2" X 8" stock to carve the popper bodies. Lenght is not important .. 18" is fine on that. Just make sure to rip cut the wood lenght wise with the grain. Thanks Bazz |

Bazz- if you need help, I can turn some o the lathe. (thats the easy part)...lol. Painting them has been the booger! I can drill them straight thru with the extra long drill bit in the press. Cupping them hasnt been too easy( i used an old design from bass lures that creates and extra large splash). I will take some pics of mine this afternoon and get them on here. I have a couple that ony need a shot of clear coat and the hooks put on. Cabelas had some stainless wire already cut in .051 inch diamter. Hard to bend, but strong. its says they are "PIKE/MUSKY stainless wire shafts".

here ya go- I started out with a 6' piece of closet rod. But found it likes to soak up water and I had to seal the baits more than normal. Next time I will use a different wood. I cut the pieces 5" long and used a hobby lathe to shape the body. I then drilled straight thru the body with a 1/8" extra long bit. I then used a wood hole drillling bit(cant think of the name of the paddle-wheel type bit..lol) . I then used a countersink bit to put a cup in the mouth. After that, I went to the grinder and too the bottom lip off and added an angle to make it spit water a little higher and reduce drag on the bottom of the mouth.(keeps it from diving under when popping). heres the prototypes:
