Too funny....
But, I agree ... the TRex Avet is overkill unless you're fishing for BIG arse fish that require a chair. Great story Gunsmoke....as Mr. Bill has proabably told you already....you're stories keep us amused down here in Corpus Christi. |

I have the Pro 30W and its perfect. Compact and powerful. 35lbs of drag is more than I can handle for more than a minute and this reel can manage it longer than I can.

Well, Bazztex and Pope, I have to confess in spite of all the good advice you and everybody else (including Rick) have given me, I went off and did a stupid thing I know I'll regret when the heavy reeling starts. I am buying the Accurate 50W on the classifieds board with JB 130. I told Rick I know I will regret it, but I am in love with Accurate equipment and I will never be able to justify having a 30 and a 50, so I am going with something that can serve all purposes. I'm fairly strong for an old fart, but I know that ain't going to get any better. I also use a .300 Win Mag on hill-country whitetail, so this will continue the tradition. I'll put this on my Cabelas 130 standup until I can save up to get a Calstar to put it on, and use it for chunking, deep drop bottom, and maybe one day for trolling.
I have also ordered a Twinspin 30 with extra spool and am going to spool up one with 80 braid and the other with 65. I'll use it mostly for surface casting. I currently have a brand new 665HXC that will be my jigging rod. For now, that will go on the Ugly Stick until I can afford a proper jigging rod. (I will start whining for advice on that selection in a month or two, as well as on the best permanent rod for the 50W.) To round it out, I have two options for a rig for making bait: my Tiger rod with a Calcutta 700 or, in the alternative, a cane pole. I don't want to exude overconfidence or brag too much, but I don't believe that any rainbow trout will be safe from now on. Russ |

Uncle Russ,
You made some great choices. Accurate makes great reels. You can never go wrong with a 50W. You will appreciate the extra capacity of line and the two speeds. Excellent reel for bottom fishing for big AJ's, Grouper, and sword fishing. Also it is an excellent marlin reel for stand up fishing. The twinspin 30 is another excellent choice. You might want to exchange that round knob for a handle that is like the one that comes with the 50W. I did. I also have a couple of the stella 20000's. There a little smoother than the twinspin, but I think the twinspin is built like a brick chit house. The 665XHC is another great forgotten reel. The casting control was a great improvement. Perfect for jigging. The calcutta 700 is one of my favorite inshore reels. I think you made some great choices and accurate products are built for the long haul. Your not an old fart if you still shoot deer with a 300 Win Mag. I pull out a .378 custom made Weatherby Mag once a year to pop some does. It's a great caliber for elephants, but sometimes I like to test my manhood with that enormous kick it provides. |

Bill,
You are definitely more of a man than I am. The .375 H&H is all I could stand, and not for long at that. I do backpack hunting in the Rockies about once every 2-3 years, and the weight started getting to my old bones, so I had Les Webernick at Rifles Incorporated put together a custom ultra light in .300 Win with a 3 X 12 Swarovski which, fully loaded weighs just a hair over 7 pounds. You would think it would kick like a mule, and it does have some recoil, but the muzzle break is incredible. Only problem is I cannot hear my keyboard clicking right now! There is always a price for everything isn't there? And while we are on the subject, with that .378, for the price of a few boxes of shells, you could go on a 52 hour trip on the Big E. Regards and thanks for the good words on the coming gear. I also think I have a lead on a couple of discontinued Accurate rods on Calstar blanks, designed specifically for the ATD 50W and the 665, respectively. Now I just need to learn how to use the stuff! I intend to take the 50W outfit to one of my farm ponds as soon as it gets in! Russ |
