I got the NZ bluefin tuna charter information.
The season is from July to mid Sept. Catching bluefin tuna in NZ is not cheap. They are asking $200NZ($150US) per hour and 24 hours are minimum. Considering they charge about $2400NZ per boat for an overnight trip(24 hour) for other species, the rates for bluefin tuna is pretty stiff. I think they decided the charter rate based on the market value of giant bluefin tuna. But good thing is their is no tip system in NZ. ![]() |

Back in the middle fifties I was able to fish with my dad out of montauk long island. It was not uncommon to see tuna blitzes like the one in the video. It was also faily common to harpoon swordfish that would be sunning theirselves on the surface. Captain Forsberg would award 50 dollars to anyone who first spotted a sword. If the fish spotted was caught you got 50 dollars. Unfortunately ,I also remember the Russian trawlers that just about wiped out the bft. I think it was about that time the USA finally extended the boundries to keep the other countries from fishing the waters out.
