Tried a Rattle Trap Saturday Night on the Cinco Tuna Trip thinking maybe a Blackfin might hit it, not a nibble.

Nate

I got a YFT Hook up on a 9" Swimbait (9" Sassy Shad 6oz Jig head) but it got off when I tried to stick the rod tip down to get the line clear of the pulpit.. got some slack and it shook the hook.

I also got a few YFT hook ups dropping a 14oz Jig right at the rig but the hooks pulled free.. must have hooked soft spots outside the head??

I threw some big Poppers Tuna Hunters and My own 4oz customs but only got one short strike blow up. It was a lot of work with the strong winds.

Anyhow like eveyone says we had some very strong winds and a faster than normal drift rate... we had to let out 700ft of line to get down 200ft to the Tuna. None of us had never skied a 12-14oz jig on top the water for 200 ft until this trip.

If you do have high winds and a fast drift rate like we did I'd use a Deep Diving trolling plug like a Manns Stretch 30. I had one and could kick myself for not using it. That would have been just too simple to let the fast moving boat pull my bait down deep for me.. LoL!

Good Luck and Catch A Bigg'un Yall!

Kevin, how was your trip on the big E? I don't know if I've caught a yellowfin on the 700h yet but I plan to put it to hard work on this trip.

Good idea Jason. I thought of targeting YFT close to the rig but once again, I had a brain fart on Friday and didn't try it but a few times on Sat night at Gunnison. By then, I figured no YFT were going to be taken at Gunnison.

I might suggest that bring a large nylon sail from the largest sailboat you can find. Tie it off somehow and hope for a good breeze. That might give the Dolphin one more knot of speed. You are a man among men for going on a 60 trip on that boat. I wish you the best of luck. I know the boat has a good Capt and you will catch fish. I gather it's a 20 hour run out, 20 hours of fishing, and a 20 hour ride home.

I would hope the Capt. doesn't pass up the fish. Those guys that went on the Cinco trip might have passed up the tuna by going to Red Hawk. I've heard that 80-100# YFT are being caught at the closer floaters for the brave that have ventured out to them in the past two weeks. A few have even been caught at Colt 45 day trolling.

Once again, good luck and I'll be praying for you. I hope you love the sound of a single screw diesel for 60 straight hours and the fact that the current might be faster than the boat. You might want to pack some ear protection. Give us a report upon your return.

Come on Tom, there is something relaxing about watching the waves return to Port A faster than the boat you are on.

If tuna are behind the shrimp boats, Dean will find them. If not catch up on your sleep on the long ride out. As surface trolling is likely to be slow due to water temp.
The current was not bad at Boomvang last weekend but no yft caught. bft where scattered and small with a few skipjack mixed in, best bite time was late evening to just before sunrise. The best jigs where pink knife and small chrome. Don't miss your bottom fishing spot as they will be few due to travel time.
