the problem we had was the ripping current, and the wind--- made for a super fast drift. I tried pinning on a live flier- and couldnt get it to where it needed to be. I probably could have cast it ona spinner- but never thought about it until now...lol. I caught my YFT on a swimbait. A lot of topwaters and flying fish imitations were thrown with only a couple fish landed. Again- the conditions limitied what worked. I never saw a rattletrap thrown- I bet it woulda worked though.

Bring a few Frenzy Angry Poppers and Yo-zui Bull GTs for topwater. A 60lb YFT was taken on a chrome/black rattletrap on my last 60hr trip.
Don't forget the long jigs. You'll get more strikes compared to the typical U.S jigs. Plastic swimbaits I'm sure would work, use the biggest leadhead jig u can find for YFT. The small Yummy fliers might be a problem for casting distance. Of course, there's always live and dead baits. Good luck!! Jig till it hurts, then jig some more. |

if you are afraid of a swimbait hook bending- just add a splitring, then an assist hook and rubberband it to the body...

Nate,
We had extremely poor conditions for our trip. The fish just weren't there in numbers. Use the methods we've used in the past and try the butterfly type jigs deep. Breakfast saturday?

Can't make breakfast, I'm in D.C. visiting the daughter. We were in Newport R.I. over the weekend for a wedding. I'll get home Sunday. How deep is deep for the butterfly jigs? I'm out of yellowfin and don't want to settle for BFT. Snagged how did you do on the trip?

Nate, if the current is ripping, pitch some chunks in front of the drift to let them sink, just like you would a jig. I can't believe I forgot chunking like this on Cinco tuna. I have done this before with very good success. I think I would of had much higher odds in landing a YFT at Redhawk on a chunk pitching it off the bow ahead of the drift

scott, i was thinking about putting some weight on a chunk line to get deeper. this was our problem. the yft i jigged came on the drop right as the boat got to the rig before the wind started pushing. down deep was the ticket. i had two hookups ;and landed one yft(bigeye).
