So, from my original question about what age makes you an old fart, I gather you guys think the cutoff is 40. A word about offshore fishing. There will come a time in your life when it's just not worth fighting the seas and heat. Your body will tell you. Everybody is different. The desire to fish also is a factor. I have a bunch of fishing friends that quit offshore fishing in their teens. They puked, and puked on offshore trips. They can only physically fish the bays because their body told them they weren't made for offshore fishing. Bay fishing is totally different. I call it "Bait Fishing". I've trolled baits bigger than any fish you will catch in a life time in the bay systems. To me, just knowing that I will be lucky to catch a over ten pounds in a years time won't cut it. I want something that will try to pull me out of the boat. The oldest person I've met on an offshore trip was in his low 80's. He was all fired up. I really don't think he could have handled a large fish for more than thirty minutes, but he was excited and glad to be in deep water. That my friends is what it is all about. I've noticed more and more middle age offshore fisherman try to pick the good weather days. Some of us don't have that privilege as work tells us the days we can fish. I personally have to fish on very rough days as the weather God's are not friendly to me. So. I just live with it. Besides, I think calm days are not good for fishing. Whitecaps oxygenate the top water and provide a cover for the bait fish. It might be comfortable, but I deal with it and keep fishing. If you think 40 is an old fart, then I am an old fart. This old fart still gets very excited about offshore fishing, and usually has fish on the deck way before the 20-25 year old crowd. ![]() |
