Hawaii is around the corner!

Here is the plan. I fly out 6/5 (Tuesday) and get to Oahu that evening. Tentatively, I have a spot to fill as a crew member for a guy on BDs the next morning (Wednesday). Thursday I have a charter on the Maggie Joe for marlin and tuna. Friday I kayak off the beaches for trevally and whatever else wants to eat what I am throwing. Friday night we have a party. Saturday is a lazy day of shopping and hiking around the island. Saturday night I am the best man in a wedding. Sunday morning I am back to crewing on a boat again. I fly home on Monday. The crewing jobs are tentative as I have only spoken to these guys through BDs. If this doesn't pan out. I will just work on taking more fish from the yak and on the one day we have a charter.

Aloha!

Words of advise- always wear slippers but never inside.
eat poki but ask for shoyu, not soy sauce
kayaking, carry favorite local inshore baits, hot dogs and old bread.

Have a great trip!

This is my first trip to Oahu and I am going to try to get to Pearl Harbor. I have to quench my thirst for blood first.

I sleep like a child on planes. I am pumped to head offshore too. I just got through conversing with the fellow Bloodydecker. We are hitting the hoos hard that Wednesday and following Sunday on his 48' Egg Harbor. He wants to stop and dive a spot for snapper too. That I know nothing about. We are on this boat the Thursday after hitting the hoos.

Fathom, can you elaborate on the slippers, food and hot dogs?

slippers are flip flops, everybody wears them, always remove them before entering anyones house.

poki is like serveche exept with shoyu, available at every supermarket in tuna, marlin, wahoo or a combo.

old bread on a tiny hook with 6 or 8 lb. fluorocarbon will get you live bait. Hot dog , bigger baits.

North shore is awesom. and don't forget to snorkel Hanama bay!

Ah ha, I see. I will make sure to eat lots of fish and remember the bait situation. I will bring some light flouro with me. Thanks for the tips.

Pope,
Enjoy your stay on Oahu. It's not my favorite island. It's the nearest thing to looking like Dallas. The skyline on Waikiki beach is full of multi story hotels. Girl watching on Waikiki is a must. North shore is nice with big waves for the surfers. I know you don't have time but next time your there, spend a day at the Polynesian Culture Center. It's like a theme park but 100% about Polynesian culture and their ways of life and living. I had to stay on Oahu for a week once and know every inch of that island. Fishing is so-so, but I wish you luck.

Kauai is the oldest island and the most beautiful. Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon are the most scenic places on the Hawaii islands. I would rate the fishing off Kauai as the second best of the islands.

Molokai is a nice very dry island. There is only one traffic light on the island. The most interesting thing about Molokai is the leopard colony. You ride down a cliff zig-zag on donkeys to get to it. There are still people with leprosy in the colony. I only fished there one time, but we did OK.

Maui just plain sucks. Fishing also sucks.

Lanai is very primitive and not one single traffic light. Also not much to do. I didn't see a boat to charter while on the island.

Hawaii, The big island is very nice. If I had to live anywhere in Hawaii I would pick Kona. Bad thing is its growing at an incredible pace. Kona and the Volcano National Park are very nice. Fishing off Kona while very good is not as good as it used to be. They kill every fish they hook, and it's coming back to haunt them.

Good luck on your trip and enjoy Oahu. Honolulu is the only town on the islands that can support itself without tourist. Hope you have a great time and catch some fish. Oh, best wishes to your friend that is getting married.

Thanks. I am packing a lot of fishing in a short time frame. I just revealed to my girlfriend of how I am using her as bait (she is going to wear a bikini for us on the boats) and I think she is wanting to do some of the things you mentioned aside from fishing. I told her she has Friday and Saturday mornings. I may have to squeaze the yaking in somewhere after making sure she is taken care of.
