galveston drum 3-23

heres a copy/paste I put up on another forum. Its nothing spectacular but its decent way to kill some time

Today almost 10lbs of crab were murdered, but it was all for a good cause. I was unable to get an early start this morning due to fire training and working on the boat. Ofcourse, after you work on a boat you have to test it; right? I finally was able to pull up to the ramp on the dike around 1 this afternoon. The wind was howling, the tide was slack, and the water looked like chocolate milk. Beats sitting at home, right? It only took about 30 seconds on the water to find out that I hadn't fixed the problem, but we were on the water and going to do some fishing.

Our first stop wasn't very cooperative which only yielded 2 drum in about an hours worth of fishing. We were steady watching other boats around us pull in drum which wasn't exactly making me happy. This particular fish I'm holding was caught by my dad, but I already had my hands full with one of my own so I held it for the pic

Followed by one of my own:

After those two little guys we picked up and moved to one of my old drum holes that has ALWAYS produced (unless Dave is with you lol.) This place lived up to its name once again. After sacrificing another crab my dad was quickly hooked up on light tackle.

We stayed here for the remainder of the afternoon (well until we ran out of energy and bait) and here is what the area produced:

All in all in a little over 3 and half hours of fishing (including running around trying to get the boat to run better) we successfully killed almost 10lbs of crab and landed 18 drum. There were no monsters today with most of them averaging around the 20-25lb mark. I can't complain though and I will take this type of quantity any day over 1 or 2 50#ers. All fish were vented and CPR'd to play again another day. I will have some videos up here later but I can only upload so much in one night!

Mr Bill you hit it dead on, that is in the Galveston ship channel almost straight across the channel from the yacht basin. They were definetly in schools as we'd have 3 or 4 on at one time then sit for 15 minutes then have a few more on. Its boring fishing which reminds me a whole lot of pulling in a rubber boot filled with water but it beats nothing at all. The boat ended up costing me today as it pissed me off bad enough I went to Islanders to relieve some tension! Here is something a little on the amusing side of the trip. These drum all needed to be vented but yesterday they were more musical than others. Check out this video of my dad venting a drum...

Where can a guy get some of those crabs for bait?

Can we catch black drum off of the Galveston fishing Pier?

pretty much any bait shop this time of year will have crabs; I picked these up on the texas city dike. Boyds out there usually will have them. I would imagine there are still being some caught on the pier there as I know they are still being caught heavily from the surf so I do not see a reason why they wouldn't be in that area.
